Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley

Waitsburg/Dayton band takes home 1st in Jazz at national event

COEUR D' ALENE - On May 30, a combined band from the Waitsburg and Dayton school bands participated at a regional "Music in the Park" event at Lake City High School in Coeur d' Alene on May 30. After the performance, the band directors, Jagelski and Gillick, took the students to the Silverwood Theme Park for fun and an awards ceremony.

Music in the Parks is a nationwide festival program where school bands and choirs perform, and are critiqued, before visiting local amusement parks, where they receive awards in three catagories. The bands are judged on tempo, style, and musicianship, and first-, second-, and third-place awards are given in concert band, choir, and jazz band catagories.

The Waitsburg and Dayton bands performed "Pink Panther" by Henry Mancini and "It Don't Mean a Thing" by Duke Ellington. The band earned first place in the jazz category against over 80 bands, from mostly larger districts in the nothwest reggion.

"It was great to see the camaraderie and collaboration between the two schools, and it felt amazing to end the year on a high note. A perfect way to celebrate Elizabeth's retirement from Waitsburg High School," said Amy Gillick.
