WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg Middle School girls basketball team won two close games during the week of February 23, 2026.
Against DeSales on Monday, February 23, the team was shut out in the first quarter for the first time this season. Trailing 11-5 at halftime, the girls scored eight in the third to tie at 13-13. In the fourth, Ryleigh Fabian sank one of two free throws as time expired, securing an 18-17 win. Fabian finished with five points and four steals, Audrey Kiefel had four points, Reagan Fabian added three, and Jaylynn Gleason, Kaitlyn Paul, and Peyton Childers each contributed two points.
Waitsburg traveled to Dayton on Wednesday, February 26, and won 16-13. Ryleigh Fabian again led scoring with eight points, seven rebounds, and five steals. Gleason had four points, Reagan Fabian three, and Kiefel added a free throw for one point.
After the main contest, the teams played a fifth quarter, in which Waitsburg emerged ahead 4-2 on two baskets by Adalin Acevedo.
"The girls are playing hard, but they need to focus more on their shots, as they missed many under-the-basket shots in the last two games. Still, a win is a win, and the team is now 8-1 on the season," said Coach Karen Huwe.
