WAITSBURG - The Columbia Walla Walla County Fire District #2 holds between two and four trainings a month to learn and maintain essential skills.
Last week, the district's Assistant Fire Chief, Dane Henze, ran an innovative training to familiarize the firefighters with the efficient use of their Personal Protective Equipment, including Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus.
At the Waitsburg station, eleven firefighters participated in a game of dodgeball while wearing full firefighting PPE and SCBAs.
"Yes, dodgeball is fun even for adults. But the purpose of the training was to build familiarity with the equipment, practice breathing techniques, and manage air," said CWWFD#2 Chief Matt Spring.
Spring emphasized the importance of camaraderie among the volunteers, noting that making training enjoyable helps strengthen the team and encourages those interested in serving their community to reach out.
