Hankins wins 3-0 at Pomeroy Christmas Tournament

WAITSBURG -Two Waitsburg wrestlers attended the Pomeroy Christmas Tournament on Monday, December 29. Senior Jarod Hankins and eighth grader Flynn Richardson joined over 100 wrestlers at the all-day tournament.

Both boy and girl wrestlers from sixteen small schools attended the meet, with action going on three mats. After the bracket matches were finished, medal rounds were held for the top three spots in each weight division.

In his first match, Hankins pinned Garrett Yost from Dayton in the first round. Hankins won his second match by pin in the first round against Emmet Stillman from Enterprise.

During the medal round in the 190-pound weight division, Hankins lost to Kole Zimmerman from Pomeroy. Hankins was pinned in the second round and finished the match with a second-place silver medal.

In Richardson's first match, he was pinned by Wyatt Gibler from Ritzville in the first round.  In his second match, he was pinned in the first round by Tyeray Gumfory from Lapawai.

"Jarod improved tremendously from his last matches. His shot defense and transition wrestling were excellent all day long," said Coach LaRue.

"Flynn Richardson is a first-year wrestler. He is an eighth grader wrestling with the Cardinal High School program. He is coming along just fine; he just needs to find his balance and rhythm," said LaRue.

The wrestling team traveled to Burbank on Saturday, January 3.

Hankins went 3-0 on the day, winning all his matches by pin, and placed first in the 190 lbs. class.  Graycen Teal won four, lost one, and placed second in the 175 lbs. class. Teal won three of his matches by pin and one by points.  Richardson lost both of his matches in the 126 lbs. class.

Waitsburg will attend the Crusader Classic at Northwest Christian High School in Colbert, Wash., on January 10.

Go Cardinals!
