WAITSBURG - The first supermoon of the year was also the last in a series of four following October, November, and December 2025.
Supermoons appear brighter and larger as they are full, while they are at their closest orbital point to Earth. The January Wolf Moon coincided with the peak of the Quadrantid meteor shower.
The next supermoons will be at the end of the year: November 24 for the Beaver Moon and December 23 for the Cold Moon.
The photo below was taken by Waitsburg resident Carrie Hendrix on January 3, 2026, with a digital SLR camera, through a Celestron telescope. Hendrix held the camera's macro lens to the telescope's eyepiece.
The picture was taken Saturday night, around 9 p.m., before thick fog rolled in.
