DAYTON — “The Senior,” directed by Rod Lurie (“The Outpost,” “The Contender”), is based on the autobiography, “The Senior: My Amazing Year as a 59-Year-Old College Football Linebacker” by Mike Flynt and Don Yaeger.
In 1971, Flynt was expelled from Sul Ross State University’s football team, losing his senior season, something he regretted for decades. In 2007, at age 59, he discovered he still had eligibility left, and rejoined the team. He became the oldest contributing player in NCAA history, inspiring many with his story of redemption.
Michael Chiklis, known for portraying strong, deeply human characters, portrays Flynt. The cast includes Mary Stuart Masterson and Rob Corddry.
The Rotten Tomatoes audience said, “Michael Chiklis and Mary Stuart Masterson make for a winning team, a heartfelt homage to a remarkable true story.” The audience gave it a strong rating of 94%.
The critics were less enthusiastic with a rating of 78%. Though one RT critic said even though it hits every familiar beat of an inspirational sports drama formula, it does not feel artificial.
Rated PG for thematic content, violence, language and a suggestive reference and has a runtime of 105 min.
