“The Naked Gun” August 22-26

DAYTON — Only one man can lead the Police Squad and save the world. Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. (Liam Neeson) follows in his father’s footsteps in “The Naked Gun”, directed by Akiva Schaffer (“Saturday Night Live”) and produced by Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”). Joining the cast are Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, and Danny Huston. Rated PG-13 for crude/sexual material, violence/bloody images, and brief partial nudity. Runtime is 85 minutes.

The Rotten Tomatoes critics’ consensus is that Liam Neeson’s gravelly gravitas proves to be a perfect fit for Frank Drebin’s deadpan buffoonery. They felt that “The Naked Gun” revived the original trilogy’s daffy sense of humor and gave the film a rating of 87%. In comparison, the audience rated it a bit lower at 78%. One moviegoer said, “Great tribute to the original. Goofy, ridiculous, random, and Liam and Pamela were great. Many good, crazy tangents within. Recommend if you were fans of the original.”

Movie lineup: “The Naked Gun” August 22-26, “Freakier Friday” August 29-Sept. 2, “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” – TBD, and “Manhattan Short Film Festival” Sept. 26-30.
