DAYTON & WALLA WALLA - Local kids are in for a week of theater and music, including live performances to share what they've learned with the community. The Missoula Children's Theatre and Walla Walla Symphony and Music Organization's Rock Camp are offering free summer programs the week of July 28.
The Missoula Children's Theatre is returning to Dayton's Liberty Theater with a production of "Snow White". The program is open to kids entering first grade through 12th grade. Pre-registration is required at libertytheater.org or at the theater on July 25 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the lobby.
Auditions will be held on Monday, July 28, at 10 a.m., and rehearsals will follow that week, concluding with two performances on Friday, August 1, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, August 2, at 3 p.m.
This opportunity is free for local youth to learn stagecraft and collaboration through community-based theater. MCT's Red Truck Tour is recognized as the world's largest touring children's theater. For more information, visit http://www.mctinc.org
The Walla Walla Music Organization and Walla Walla Symphony are presenting Rock Camp, a free, one-week intensive music camp, held from July 28 to August 1 at Walla Walla Community College.
Musicians of all abilities, entering grades 7 through 12, will work with professional musicians in classes that include instrumental and vocal workshops, Latin drumming, sound, and recording. They will also learn a band necessity, how to make a Rock' n' Roll T-shirt.
There will be three classes held in the mornings on Monday through Friday. After classes on the first day, campers will form bands, choose names, and select the songs they will perform at the final concert on Friday, August 1.
After lunchtime, the bands will practice for several hours each day. Some students will work on production skills, including photography, video, merchandising, and stage set-up, and some will do both.
The result of the week's work will be the Rock Camp Concert, a free live performance for friends, family, and the community. It will be held on Friday, August 1, at 5:30 p.m., at the Walla Walla Community College Performing Arts Center.
Rock Camp is offered free to participants and limited to 50 campers. Organizers ask campers to be committed to attending each day, including the final performance, to support their bands. Though registration closed on July 18, campers could be added later if space permits.
