WALLA WALLA — Throughout the growing season, volunteer Master Gardeners share their extensive knowledge in various gardening practices with their local community. Master Gardeners are university-trained volunteers who provide research-based information about gardening, environmental stewardship, and horticulture topics. They receive in-depth training, often offered by universities or their extension services.
The Walla Walla WSU Expansion Office in Walla Walla is accepting applications for its 2025/26 Master Gardener Program, which begins in October 2025 and ends in March 2026. The program includes virtual, classroom, and field-based instruction by WSU Extension staff and regional experts. Trainees will learn how to provide education and advice on home gardening, pest management, composting, and related topics. Other topics include basic botany, soil science, plant identification, and the diagnosis of pests and diseases.
Once participants have completed the program, Master Gardeners share what they’ve learned through horticultural-related community service, including plant clinics, virtual and personal contact, demonstrations, and classes supervised and supported by the Walla Walla County Extension program coordinator.
Master Gardeners are also available to provide information at the Walla Walla Farmer’s Market and gardening clinics at the extension office on Tuesdays and Thursdays from April through September. Growers can also contact WSU Master Gardeners online to identify insects, plants, weeds, and problems with lawns and plants at https://tinyurl.com/2srw2zb9.
Tuition for the Master Gardener training is $275, and a $30 materials fee. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on August 15. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and reside in Walla Walla County to be eligible.
