WAITSBURG – Waitsburg's high school coaches presented certificates and awards to the spring sports athletes on Monday, June 9.
The WHS softball season ended before the first pitch due to low turnout. Seniors Madison Kaehler and Morgan Lindsey were recognized for not having the opportunity to play their final year of softball.
Track coach Hunter Wallace gave thanks to the senior leaders, families, and staff for their support. It was Wallace's first year coaching at WHS, and she was known for her "quotes of the day."
Coach Dan Nechodom presented letters to the track team athletes and thanked Wallace for her knowledge of track and support.
Nechodom presented Marion Duncan and Brenton Segraves with the Most Inspirational award, an honor voted on by the team.
The Coaches Award went to Alyssa Hollingsworth who set high standards and was a leader. Her PR at District championships earned her a State slot in the 800m. She was presented with a State Track certificate and patch.
Baseball Coach Joe Greer recognized his managers Kayla Mikesell and Gemma Anderson.
Greer said the team had highs and lows this season, but they held each other accountable and ended a 25-year drought; making it to the play-offs.
All team members were awarded with a letter. Cougar Anderson was presented with a baseball signed by players for his senior year.
Isa Reyes hit two home runs this season and had aggressive baserunning. He was presented with the Silver Slugger Award. Reyes set a good example on and off the field, and his skills and sportsmanship earned him The All Opponent – 1st Team Award.
Isaac Mahre was presented with the Golden Glove Award for being versatile and excelling at any position.
Captain Jarod Hankins led by example. He was presented with the Coaches Award.
Most Valuable Player award went to JJ Gleason. A natural athlete with baseball knowledge. He had the highest steal percentage and on base average.
Greer finished by thanking assistant coach Randy Hinchliffe.
