Waitsburg Commercial Club 2024 Community Service Awards

WAITSBURG -The Waitsburg Commercial Club honored community members at its annual meeting and community service awards dinner on Tuesday, April 16.

Judy Bennett welcomed guests to the Community Service Awards and Waitsburg Commercial Club's annual meeting.

The event was held at American 35, where guests enjoyed a lasagna dinner, desserts, a silent auction, and a chance to celebrate Waitsburg's one-of-a-kind community.

Newly elected Commercial Club President Tiffany Baxter presenting the Community Service Award to Jillian Henze.

The 2024 Community Service Award was presented to Jillian Henze. Incoming Commercial Club President Tiffany Baxter presented the award to Henze for her work on the Waitsburg City Council and the Community Health and Protection Committee. Henze has also lent her public relations and organizational skills to the Weller Public Library, Parks and Recreation, Friends of the Pool, RYSE, and the reconstituted Friends of the Waitsburg Fairgrounds.

Kevin House accepted the Business of the Year Award for The McGregor Company. Presenter Joy Smith recognized the company and House for their many contributions to the community, including immediate help after the 2020 flood by providing storage and staging space for emergency equipment.

This year, the club selected Kathy Carpenter as Employee of the Year. The nomination letter from Kate Hockersmith acknowledged Carpenter for her extensive work with Waitsburg Youth. Presenter Ann Walsh spoke of programs Carpenter started at the school, including the afterschool program, The Cardinals Nest and her leadership on the Rural Youth Enrichment Services (RYSE) board.

Sophia Castillo received her Youth of the Year Award and a hug from Karen Huwe.

Seventh grader Sophia Castillo was awarded the first Youth of the Year award. Karen Huwe's nomination letter noted Castillo's involvement at her school and in the community. She assisted at the school's Halloween haunted house, decorating and channeling a scary character for the event. Castillo's hot glue gun skills assisted kids in decorating Christmas ornaments during Hometown Christmas.
