WALLOWA COUNTY-In July, the Nez Perce Wallowa Homeland hosts a reunion for descendants of the original inhabitants of waláwa, the Wallowa country. Participants enjoy three days of song and dance, culminating in a walasit service and Friendship feast. The 31st Annual Tamkaliks Celebration was held July 21 through 23, 2023. The event, previously known as the Wallowa Band Descendants Friendship Potluck & Powwow, celebrates the continuing Nez Perce presence in the Wallowa Valley and is attended by descendants, locals, and visitors. Dayton resident and photographer Roger Tumbocon enjoyed the event's dancing, food, and crafts on Saturday with his familiy.
