At five minutes 'til noon here this July 4, a small cadre of servicemen advanced with Old Glory and service flags to an agreed upon rendezvous point – the intersection of Main Street and Third. Once assembled, the eight men spread the width of the street – six hoisting the colors, the other two bookending the group as rifle bearers. At the sounding of the noon siren, the unit advanced in patriotic reverence two blocks toward the hardware store to the sound of the applause of a few dozen or more appreciative onlookers. The group consisted of John Lieberman, Dorn Hall, Bruce Abbey, Jim Harting, John Stellwagen, Jack McCaw, Rod Baker, and Bret Moser, with Ike Keve and Tom Baker bringing up the rear guard a few steps behind them. Once in front of the hardware store, Moser, a retired Army captain, read from the Declaration of Independence and said a prayer. McCaw, an enlisted navy man during World War II, concluded the downtown proceedings by leading the crowd in a rendition of "God Bless America".

July 16, 1998

Robert Hinchliffe, son of Jill Hinchliffe, Waitsburg, and George Hinchliffe of Prescott, has been honored for academic achievement during the spring semester at the University of Idaho. He is a 1995 graduate of Waitsburg High School.

Jason Payne, son of John and Kathy Payne, is being published in the Journal of Bacteriology, August 1998, Volume 180, No. 15. The title is "Purification and Characterization of EDTA Monooxygenase from the EDTA-Degrading Bacterium BNCI". Jason is working on his Ph.D. in Microbiology at WSU. He is in his third year. He received his undergraduate degree in Microbiology in May 1995 from WSU. He is working under Dr. Luying Xun. He also recently attended the National Microbiology Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Along with taking in many seminars and new ideas, Jason presented a poster on his work. Jason is married to Micki McCoy Payne, daughter of Terry McCoy, Waitsburg.

July 12, 1973

[Photo Caption] Sidney Conner, owner of the Waitsburg Pharmacy, has purchased the Allen Building in Waitsburg from J. V. Glover. Sid has drawn up plans to move the pharmacy across the street as "soon as possible." Albert Land, contractor, will work on remodeling the new store space. The Allen Building contains the Walla Walla County Justice Court rooms, and it housed, for many years, Allen's Grocery and Markey, and most recently was the site of Craig's Variety Store. Sid says that the new location will give him lots more room, and the location will be very convenient to the post office location.

July 16, 1948

Jacqueline Archer, Marilyn Collingwood, Jean Gibson, Margaret McBride, Sharon White and Sereta Patton were among the busload of singing Camp Fire girls who left for Camp Kiwanis at Kooskooskie on July 11th.

New owners of Waitsburg Welding Works, Inc. are David Barer and I. J. Barer of Walla Walla.

Gardening prizes were awarded this week to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Atkins, Dr. and Mrs. E. J. Lewis, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Neace, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Dyar, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Butler and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Dilts.

One Hundred Years Ago

July 20, 1923

George Reid and Willie Bowles, and Wesley Lloyd of Waitsburg, this week received their respective "Humming Bird" threshers manufactured by Wood Brothers Thresher Co. of Iowa.

Mrs. W. O. McCaw started the season this year with nine birds; one gobbler and eight hens. To date her hens have hatched and raised to be good-sized birds, 160 turkeys.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

July 22, 1898

A fight between two drunken hobos occurred on Monday morning on 2nd Street near Neace-Hanger Co. store in which both parties received some pretty ugly cuts. Marshal Prescott separated them and after partly sobering them up in the city "cooler" escorted them to the city limits and bade them goodbye.

Isaac Neace, a son of Lewis Neace arrived in this city on last Friday with his bride, on a visit to friends and relatives.

Mrs. Jennie Marvin and daughter Lucile spent several days in Walla Walla.
