Running back Damien Johnson breaks into the clear during a game in Dayton earlier this year.

KITTITAS-The Dayton-Waitsburg football team made the long trip to Kittitas a success Friday night, crushing the home team, 58-22.

After a tough first quarter in which they gave up two touchdowns, the DW defense toughened up and held Kittitas scoreless until late in the game with the lead insurmountable. On the other side of the ball, the DW offence had a big game, scoring five touchdowns, and piling up over 400 yards rushing. The defense got a TD of their own on an interception and 65-yard runback by Chris Andrews in the second quarter.

"DW came out flat from the three-hour bus ride and three lineman not showing up to the game. We made some last-minute adjustments and played 48 minutes as a team," said Coach Troy Larsen. "We controlled the game from the second quarter on, and it was rewarding to see the confidence of this DW team build over the last two weeks."

Once again, DW focused on the running game, with Andrews carrying the ball 18 times for 215 yards and two offensive TDs. Quarterback Brayden Miller had 13 runs for 87 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Damien Johnson had 16 carries for 100 yards and one TD.

Miller completed three of eight pass attempts for 55 yards.

In this game, DW was again penalized heavily – 15 times for 145 yards – but was able to overcome those setbacks.

"The offensive line also came to play Friday night, drive blocking Kittitas back all night," Larsen said. "Defensively, Cason Nichols joined Andrews with two interceptions, and it was Seamus House and Christian Watson-Solis starting to really figure out the [outside linebacker] positions."

Larsen also gave credit to his coaching staff. "Gabe Kiefel, [our] defensive coordinator, has been working hard with them all year to get them rolling," he said.

DW plays its only game of the year in Waitsburg this Friday night, taking on Columbia Burbank for Senior Night. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
