Lanning Scores 20 as Cards Beat Dayton

January 16, 2014

Dayton's Zach Waggoner puts up a shot against WP's Corey Brownlee during Saturday's game in Waitsburg. The WP Cardinals won the game 55-40.

WAITSBURG - In what coach Tavis Crittenden described as a "brutal" schedule, the Waitsburg-Prescott boys basketball team played four games in five days between Saturday and Tuesday.

On Friday, the Cardinals traveled to DeSales and lost to the Irish 62 - 51. They beat Dayton Saturday night at home, 55-40, and then lost to WWVA Monday night, also at home, 66-58. As The Times was going to press Tuesday, the Cardinals were preparing to travel to Milton-Freewater to play the Mac-Hi Pioneers.

On Friday, the Cardinals led 45-38 going into the fourth quarter, but scored only six points in the final frame, while giving up 24 to the Irish. "We were flat Friday," said Crittenden. "We had a 13-point lead at one point. But the guys played hard.

Owen Lanning led WP with 15 points, while Chance Leroue and Corey Brownlee each had 12.

On Saturday, WP played a solid game at home, beating Dayton 55-40. Lanning again led the Cardinals, with a dominant 20 points. Leroue had 13.

The Bulldogs led at the end of one, 11- 8. But the Cardinals dominated the second and third quarters, pulling out to a 45 - 27 lead at the end of three.

"We were more patient and moved the ball a lot better against Dayton," Crittenden said. "Everybody got to play, which gave our reserves some great experience."

Against WP, Zach Waggoner had 13 points for the Bulldogs, followed by 8 each for Logan Hays and Cruz Ramirez. Ramirez hit two three pointers in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough.

On Monday, WP hosted

WWVA and fell to the Knights, 66 - 58. WWVA hit eight three-point shots during the game. "Their threes killed us," the coach said.

Crittenden said that the hardest part of the long weekend of games was that the team didn't get to practice. "We don't practice on Sunday's of course," he said. "We saw some things we needed to work on, but there was no chance.

"The kids are a little tired," Crittenden said prior to the Mac-Hi game. "They've been playing hard this week."

After a few days off, the Cardinals will travel to Asotin on Saturday. Dayton next plays Tri-Cities Prep on the road Friday and then hosts DeSales Saturday.
