Cardinals Crunch Bulldogs

October 17, 2013

Above, Dayton quarterback Christian Warner gets hammered by Cardinal defenders as he attempts a pass. Right: Wide receiver Devin Acevedo hauls in a pass from Owen Lanning on his way to scoring a touchdown late in the first half.

WAITSBURG - Waitsburg Prescott running back Chance Leroue averaged more than 10 yards per carry and scored two touchdowns Friday, as he led the hometown Cardinals to a lopsided 41-7 win over Dayton. Besides gaining 135 yards on 13 rushes, Leroue also caught one pass for 11 yards. WP quarterback Owen Lanning added 62 yards on five keepers and scored two TDs of his own.

Taking advantage of multiple Bulldog turnovers, the Cardinals racked up five touchdowns in the first half, going to the locker room with a 34-0 lead.

Lanning led off the scoring with touchdown runs of 44 and four yards, both in the first quarter. Leroue scored on runs of 24 and seven yards in the second quarter, and Devin Acevedo chipped in with an 18-yard touchdown reception.

"We prepared hard for a rival game that is always a hard game to win," said WP Coach Jeff Bartlow. Bartlow pointed out that in their previous game, against DeSales, the Bulldogs racked up 350 yards rushing, including 300 by Lowden Smith.

"In years past (like our championship year winning only by the score of 7-6) we have traditionally struggled against Dayton," Bartlow continued. "So, it was serious business."

Dayton's Smith had much less success against WPs, defense, as he was held to only 53 yards on 18 carries.

Smith also scored Dayton's only touchdown, but it came in his role as a linebacker. While on the defensive side, he picked up a fumble by WPs Jacob Dunn in the fourth quarter and rambled 68 yards (more than his entire offensive output) for the score.

Bartlow said that, after a rocky start, Lanning had a very good game at QB. "He ran smart and played smart; threw a couple of TD passes and had no turnovers," he said. Then, praising his running back, Bartlow said, "Chance again played hard and was a huge factor in our success, both on offense and defense."

On the Dayton side, quarterback Christian Warner struggled, throwing three completions and three interceptions in 13 attempts. The Bulldogs also lost four fumbles.

"The bottom line is that we stopped their run," said Bartlow. "They threw over the top of us a few times as we were committed to stopping the run and stopping Lowden Smith."

It was WP's seventh straight victory over the Bulldogs.
