Dayton Boys Struggle, Take Lewiston JV

January 17, 2013

Dayton's Cruz Ramirez takes a shot during the game against Lewiston JV Tuesday night.

DAYTON - It took an extra four minutes to finish, but the Dayton boys claimed some consolation after a disastrous road weekend by beating the Lewiston JV in overtime Tuesday, 39-34, in their final non-league game of the season. The Bulldogs dropped a pair of contests to DeSales and Walla Walla Valley Academy Friday and Saturday after being up double figures (versus DeSales) and tied (versus WWVA) at half. Dayton fell to the Irish 47-35, and to the first place Knights, 46-34.

Bulldog coach Roy Ramirez elected to start his two foreign exchange students Tuesday "to give them the experience of being introduced at the beginning of a game, and real varsity playing time". Pedro Barbosa and Takayuki Inoue played well, but the Bengals started even better jumping to an 11-2 lead at the 3:40 mark on the strength of three 3-point baskets.

Enter Zach Waggoner and Grant Heinrich for the Bulldogs. Waggoner provided an immediate boost to the Bulldog offense, scoring a put-back at 3:22 and two free throws a minute later. Wyatt Frame knocked home a pair of 2-point field goals to close out the quarter, and Dayton trailed by just one after 8:00.

The Bulldog run continued into the second period. Waggoner hit on two more inside buckets. Lambert capped the 14-0 run with a fast break lay-in at 1:30. The Bulldogs held the Bengals scoreless until Chase Urquhart hit a 15-footer with 30 seconds left in the half. Frame buried a bucket with two ticks left to put Dayton up 18-13 going into the locker rooms.

Lewiston's squad came out with ears pinned back in the third. The Bengals frustrated the Bulldog offense to the tune of five third quarter points, while scoring 12 of their own. The Bengals built the lead to six, 29-23, before Frame took over scoring nine of the Dogs last 11, points in- cluding a crucial 3 to put the Dogs back into the lead and an alley-oop buzzer beater delivered by Cruz Ramirez to tie the game again and send it into overtime.

In the extra four minutes, Dayton held the Bengals scoreless while Frame countered with all five Dayton points to provide the winning margin, 39-34.

Frame finished with high point total of 20. Waggoner added eight-all in the first half run. No Bengal scored in double-figures.

Friday's game with De- Sales was heart-breaking to say the least. Not only did Dayton lose to their rival, but they did so after leading by 10 points at half.

The third period proved crucial. The Irish outscored the Bulldogs 24-2 in the period. The Irish hit on 9-of-13 from the field including 3-of- 3 behind the arc. Meanwhile, Dayton managed just one field goal in 13 tries.

Frame led all scorers with 16 points, but he was matched by DeSales' Adam Eskil with 16. Cameron Richman closely followed with 14.

Dayton matched first place WWVA stride-for- stride through the first half of Saturday night's contest. But WWVA limited Day- ton's scoring in the second half while outscoring the Bulldogs in periods 3 and 4 by 12.

Frame and Lambert both hit double figures-Frame with 18, and Lambert with 12. Jordan Schuette led the Knights with 15 while guard Matt Hanson added 11.

The three games improve Dayton's record to 3-10 on the year, and 1-3 in league. Dayton plays next versus Tri-Cities Prep Friday in Dayton.
