Lady Cards Split Doubleheader Against DeSales

DAYTON- T h e Lady Tigers Tuesday spl i t their doubleheader against the Irish following a similar result against the Bulldogs this weekend.

Those scores mean WP is now tied with Dayton for first in the league.

The Tigers lost their first game against DeSales 3-5, but won game two 8-1. More details will be in the Times next week.

WP and Dayton Bulldogs split a league double- header last Friday afternoon in Dayton. The Bulldogs took the first game in eight innings 7-6 while the Tigers took the night cap 9-6 to maintain their first place league standings.

Tiger Katy Hofer slammed an over the fence home run in the top of the first inning to get the Tiger offence geared up to a five run lead over the Bulldogs by second inning.

The Bulldogs didn't light up the board until the bottom of the third when Sam Harting's triple scored one run.

The Bulldogs held off WP in the top of the fourth with three up, three down.

Nicki Lambert seemed to get things started for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the fourth with a double, but was caught off the bag before the umpire called time and the Bulldogs suffered their first out.

McKayla Bickelhaupt's single, Shelby Smith's double, and Jessica Tate's freebee from the WP mound loaded the bases for the Bulldogs.

Another walked batter and two back to back Tiger errors would put three runs on the board for the Bulldogs narrowing the WP lead to one.

WP pitcher Jennifer Nichols struck out Dayton's Kayla Turner to end the inning and get the Tigers back to the plate.

Tiger Taylor Moon led off the top of the fifth rattling out a triple to center field. Sara Wilson sent a grounder to third to score Moon.

Bulldog pitcher Turner walked two Tigers to load the bases. With two outs Turner came back and struck out a Tiger to end the inning with the Tigers leading 6-4.

The Bulldogs started off the top of the fifth with doubles from Sam Harting, Miwa Umeda, and Nicole Lambert that put two runs on the board to tie up the game 6-6 with no outs.

The Tiger's defensive combo of a Nichols strike out, Moon's thorw out at first, and first baseman Sara Wilson throwing out a Bulldog at the plate would end the fifth inning.

Two more strike outs from WP's Nichols and Moon snagging a line drive at short stop in the bottom of the sixth sent the Bulldogs back to the dug out and began the edge of your seat, nail biting, do or die seventh inning.

WP's began the top of the seventh with Sam Moss hitting a single up the middle and Sara Wilson followed with a double.

With one out and two WP runners Bulldog Turner struck out WP's Rachelle Oseth and Alyssa Hafen grounded out to second and the Bulldogs get their chance to take the game.

WP's outfielders Hafen and Hailey Goenen shut down the Bulldog fly balls and Nichols struck out Bickelhaupt and the opener is pushed into extra innings all tied up 6-6.

WP led off the eighth with a single up the middle from Goenen and a sacrifice bunt from Moon advanced her to second.

Sara Wilson grounded out at first advancing Goenen into scoring position but Dionna Baker grounded out at first and the Tigers were left scoreless.

Bulldog lead off hitter of the inning Shelby Smith knocked out a triple to center field to put one runner on.

WP's Nichols struck out Jessica Tate for one out followed by a bunt from Collen Delp in an attempt to score Smith, but WP checks the runner back to third and the Bulldogs have one out with runners on first and third. Delp steals second but WP's Nichols throws down another "K" and it's two down with two runners on.

Another extra inning looked like it was in the works but Bulldog Turner hit a double to score the winning run and the Tigers faced their first league loss 7-6.
