DeSales Sweeps WP

Tiger Dalton Estes gets ready to leave his base as Bulldog Lowden Smith prepare to catch a pass Saturday.

DAYTON-The WP Tigers swept the Dayton Bulldogs in a league double-header last Saturday in Dayton. But they weren't as effective against arch rival DeSales on Tuesday, losing 3-4 and 8-2 in their doubleheader with the Irish.

Their league games done, the Tigers now await the outcome of other league games to see if they're in the running for the playoffs. More details and results of Tuesday's game will appear in next week's edition of the Times.

This weekend, the Tigers came out in full force against the Bulldogs, belting out 14 hits, 10 RBI's and committing just two errors in the opener.

WP's Zach Bartlow took control from the mound in game one striking out seven batters and walking just one.

The Tigers jumped to a 5-0 lead by the top of the third and scored two more in the fourth with a RBI double from Tre Brannock and an RBI single from TJ Hofer.

They exploded for seven runs in the top of the sixth when Joe Purdin ripped an RBI single up the middle followed by another shot up the middle from Hofer. Justin Zuger hit an RBI single to left and David Brock took a freebee to first to load the bases.

Kyle Dozie's sacrifice fly ball to left and Bartlow's line drive to right brought in two more Tigers. Dalton Estes dropped a fly ball into right field to score two runners and the Tigers increase their lead 14-0.

The Bulldogs were in need of scoring to eliminate the ten run rule going into effect but the Tiger defense shut them down with three up, three down, to take the opener in six innings.

"The lower half of the line up really started hitting the ball," said WP head coach Dustin Snedigar. "We made some adjustments and it showed."

The Tigers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second game but the Bulldogs found their way out of the dog house to rattle the bats in the bottom of the fourth. With one runner on Joey Schlachter connected for a single and Riley Stevens took one for the team and the Bulldogs bases were loaded with no outs.

A WP pitching error brought in Dayton's first run of the day. Wyatt Frame popped out to third base and Isaiah Lambert struck out at the plate and the Bulldog two out rally began.

Hayden Fullerton placed a single to left and a wild throw to first would allow two to score. Lowden Smith's single re-loaded the bases and Colton Bickelhaupt put one in right field to bring in two more runs but Smith is tagged out at home trying to bring in a third and the inning ended with the Bulldogs leading for the first time 5-4.

The Tigers scored one run in the top of the fifth and Estes slammed an over the fence home run to right field in the top of the sixth to score two and the Tigers take back the lead 7-5.

The Bulldogs scored two in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game. With two outs and Bickelhaupt on second any further scoring in the inning was shut down when he was caught in a pickle on an attempt to steal third.

Tiger Tucket Alleman positions his glove to make a catch during his team's doubleheader against Dayton this weekend.

In the top of the seventh WP's Matt Hamilton belted out a triple to center field and crossed the plate for the go ahead run on a grounder from Purdin.

With an 8-7 lead going into the bottom of the seventh the Tiger defense pulled through with Bartlow digging up a grounder, Purdin throwing his seventh "K" of the day, and Estes snagging a fly ball at short stop to clench the night cap.

" We had to battle them," said Snedigar. "It was a back and forth affair, it was real good win."

The Tigers had 26 hits for the day with Hofer going four for four at the plate in game one and Estes going three for three in game two.

The WP Tigers will play the Touchet Indians May 5th in Prescott at 4 pm .

With a record of 5-7, they now watch the outcome of other league games to see what their final rank will be.
