Baker Leads Valley Teams

Star player Dakota Baker takes a careful look at his position on the course before his next swing.

RICHLAND - - Ba d weather has dampened the spirits of Touchet Valley high school golfers in the last few weeks.

" It has been difficult for us to get any consistent practice," said Dayton/WP head golf coach Mike Mc- Ghan. "For example, we got snowed out two weeks ago."

The Dayton and Waitsburg Prescott teams played at Columbia Point Golf Course in Richland last Tuesday but didn't have complete games.

The 18-hole, par 72 course was tough for all five teams. Tri-Cities Prep boys took top scores with 345 points, Pomeroy second with 350, Liberty Christian with 374. Dayton and WP were incomplete.

WP's Dakota Baker scored 81, just 9 over par.

"Dakota had an outstanding round save for a couple of out-of-bounds penalties; he has been playing more consistently lately," McGhan said .

Dayton senior Dain Henderson scored 85, while Tim Ihle made 116 and Mohannad Owiwi 135. None of the five schools had complete teams.

Dayton's Molly Payne and Taylor Brown did well with 112 and 118 respectively.

"Molly continues to lower her score; she is definitely a warm weather golfer," Mc- Ghan said. "Taylor is beginning to get her game back despite missing last year and getting a late start this year. "

While the weather was not ideal, the kids were all able to play in shirtsleeves rather than their winter coats, their coach reported. "Actually, it was a beautiful day for golf."

Henderson also played great despite a couple of bad holes on the front 9 and absolutely no good breaks, McGhan stated.

"I am looking forward to getting everybody back in time for sub-district in a couple of weeks," he said.

In the District 9 Boys Invitational, also at Columbia Point in Richland, just a few days prior, Dayton and WP also had incomplete teams.

In the 18-hole, par 72 course, Henderson scored 83, Tim Ihle 108, and Mohannad Owiwi 127. WP's Baker scored 87.

"Hopefully we will be back to a full team by the time sub-district comes around," McGhan said. "Injuries and outside committments have made it impossible to field a complete team."

On April 19, at Asotin's Quail Ridge (an 18-hole, par 71 course), Henderson scored 93 and Tim Ihle 134. Baker scored 90. Dayton girls Payne and Brown scored 116 and 126 respectively.

"Dakota is playing great golf right now and is improving every day," Mc- Ghan said following the mid-April match. "Dain had a rough day with 6 out-ofbounds penalties. Otherwise he played well. Molly has always been a slow starter and tends to peak at the end of the year. This year seems to be no exception."
