Lady Tigers Hold On To Perfect Record

April 21, 2011

Waitsburg Senior Alyssa Hafen slams a single during WP's second game against TOR in Prescott on Saturday.

PRESCOTT - Coming off a nearly three-week break since their last outing, the Waitsburg- Prescott Lady Tigers swept the TOR Nighthawks in a league double header.

The Tigers took the first game 11-6 with Jennifer Nichols getting things started from the circle with a solid performance, striking out six Nighthawks and walking just three.

"Limiting the amount of batters walked is the biggest thing," said head coach Angie Potts. "If you can take away the freebies and not just give runs away, you're going to win ball games."

Offensively the Tigers didn't settle for freebies that the Nighthawks were handing out; they took control of the scoreboard with the crack of the bat. Eight Tigers tallied up hits in game one, with Alyssa Hafen and Dionna Baker each knocking out two hits a piece while Katy Hofer and Hailey Goenen power-housed their way to two doubles each.

The night cap started with Kazmira Grende throwing from the circle and striking out two Nighthawks in the top of the first. Hafen and Ashley Wilson hits in the bottom of the first, combined with three free passes to first base, put the Tigers on the board with a 3-0 lead.

Three more runs were chalked up in the second when Goenen's single drove in two, and she crosses the plate while the Nighthawks bobbled a Taylor Moon bunt.

The third inning brought one more run for the Tigers and a possible sprained wrist to left fielder Rachelle Oseth, who was coming in hot at the plate and was stopped cold by the Nighthawk catcher.

"It hurt pretty bad." said Oseth.

"The catcher had the plate covered very tightly with her leg and coming in head first I just collided, and that was the end of the game for me."

The Tigers gave up the second run scored by the Nighthawks due to a fielding error but came right back and turned a double play to hold the lead 7-2. Hafen's quick thinking base running and Baker's hit to right field gave them an eightrun lead after the fifth.

The Nighthawks would score just one more run before Hofer's triple, Sam Moss's single, and Rhionna Chapman's sneaking home put the 10-run rule into effect, and the Tigers captured the game 13-3.

"We had a few errors," said Potts. "Overall the girls played really well today. They didn't let the errors get them down; they continued to communicate really well."

The Lady Cards are now 4-0 in league standings and have three double-headers this week for fans to get a chance to get out there and catch some action.
