Dayton Takes Lead At Golf Scramble

April 21, 2011

DAYTON - Dayton and Tri-Cities Prep were scheduled for an 18-hole match at the Touchet Valley Golf Course in Dayton last Friday, but both teams were missing so many golfers the coaches decided to mix things up and put the kids into teams and play a scramble.

"We have always wanted to try something different in Dayton," Dayton head coach Mike McGhan said. "This was a great opportunity to put a little twist in things. It came at a good time as the weather has been getting the kids down. The kids had fun but got soaked in the rainy weather."

A scramble is when a team (or three in this case) of golfers each hit their drives and then choose one of them to play. The team must use a minimum of three of each member's drives.

All three teams then place their balls in that spot, and they again choose the best of the three to play.

The score on the hole is the score they get using the best of three strokes.

The result was a par 36, 9-hole scramble, and not surprisingly, Dayton's golfers scored best of the teams.

Dayton's team one (including Dain Henderson, Mohannad Owiwi and Abby Chapman) hit right on par with 36.

The Dayton/Waitsburg team 2 (with Dakota Baker of Waitsburg, and Dayton's Tim and Kyla Ihle) hit 37, just one over par.

TCP teams 2 and 1 scored 45 and 46 respectively.

The Dayton/WP golfers also played an 18-hole game in Asotin on Tuesday, but those results were not available by press time.
