Mixed Results: Bulldogs Square Off Against Patriots

February 10, 2011

Lady Bulldog Jessica Tate considers her move against a Lady Patriot during Friday night's game at home as coach Scott Hudson and supporters from the bench holler advise and worry about the close game.

DAYTON - The Bulldogs were victorious against the bigger Liberty Christian Patriots on Friday night in Dayton, defeating the visiting men's team 50-47.

The Lady Bul ldogs fought hard but lost to their female counterparts 63-54.

The extra-tall men's team from Liberty Christian had three big-time scorers, including 5-foot-9 sophomore Mike Olson with 12 points, 5-foot-9 junior Jake Stiefken with 19 points and 6-foot-5 senior Bryon Korrigan with 14 points. Senior Travis Sitton, at 6-foot-3, was the only other scorer, squeezing in two additional points.

Against this scoring machine were Dayton's top scorers including 5-foot- 11 junior Hayden Fullerton with 19, juniors Joey Schlachter (6-foot-1) and Kroft Sunderland (6-foot-2) with seven, and 5-foot-11 junior Garett Turner with six.

At the end of the first quarter, Dayton was up six points, nearly doubling Liberty Christian's seven points with 13 of their own. In the second quarter the Bulldogs nearly doubled their score, putting the game at 24-17.

The Patriots just couldn't keep up. They tried to push hard in the second half, getting in 13 for Dayton's eight points in the third quarter. But in the fourth quarter Dayton pushed back, not allowing the Patriots to gain a lead and shooting 18 for Liberty Christian's 17 points.

Junior Colton Bickelhaupt gave five assists and Turner three. And on rebound were Schlachter, Bickelhaupt and Fullerton.

The girls game was a testament to how far the Lady Bulldogs have come since December. Against the skill Lady Patriots, Dayton was neck and neck in the first half, tying 30-30 at the half.

But then Dayton came out flat in the third quarter, which hurt the Lady Bulldogs quickly. They scored eight to Liberty Christian's 14 and never quite got their momentum back, though they put 16 final points on the board in the last quarter

The Patriots, however, managed 19 and took home the victory.

Dayton's lead scorers were sophomore McKayla Bickelhaupt with 14 points, and juniors Samura Miller and Nicole Lambert with eight each

Bickelhaupt and Miller also dazzled a packed gymnasium of proud parents on this senior night home game with treys - one by Bickelhaupt and two by Miller.

Dayton plays their final two league games this week at away matches against DeSales on Friday and Tri- Cities Prep on Saturday.
