  • Cards Slip To 3rd Place

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Feb 9, 2012

WALLA WALLA--The WP Lady Cardinals slipped down to a third-place standing in the Blue Mountain League after a 40-48 loss to the DeSales Fighting Irish last Saturday night. Early turnovers, cold shooting and some good old-fashioned DeSales home gym offi ciating put the Cards in early foul trouble. With seven first-quarter Cardinal fouls, head coach Jerry Baker went to his bench early to try and spark some Cardinal offense. With the constant blowing of the whistle, it was impossible for the Cardinals to find any sort of rhythm to build the...

  • Lady Dogs On A Roll

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 9, 2012

DAYTON - After the Lady Bulldogs' game against the TCP Jaguars was over last Tuesday, one of the Blue Mountain League referees came up to head coach Clayton Strong in the boys' locker room and told the Dayton coach what was already on everyone's mind. "They've made an immense improvement since I saw them earlier in the season," the ref told Strong. After beating TCP, 47-37, Tuesday night, the girls went 5-6 in league and 7-12 overall - not a record many observers would have expected at the...

  • Bulldogs Bounce Back, Roll Over TCP

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 9, 2012

DAYTON - Shaken up a bit after their loss against the Cardinals last week, it took the Bulldogs a couple of games to regain their footing. But Tuesday night's resounding, 73-28, defeat of the Jaguars team that came within two points of beating Dayton last Wednesday shows the Dogs have found their mojo again. "Things are coming back together," senior Bulldog Colton Bickelhaupt said. "We had a tough stretch there with WP and TCP. But tonight we played better defense, we pushed the ball up the...

  • Cardinals Outlast Irish

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Feb 9, 2012

WALLA WALLA- The WP Cardinals kept their second place Blue Mountain League standing with a 49-45 victory over the DeSales Fighting Irish last Saturday night. It was another heart-pounding, nail-biter of a game as the Irish jumped out to a sevenpoint lead right out of the gate. Free throws from Dustin Wooderchak and Sterling Eastman got the Cards on the board, but it would be minutes later before the Cardinals' cold shooting finally produced a basket. This happened when Zach Bartlow found...

  • All Tigers Go To Regionals

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Feb 9, 2012

WARDEN -- All four WP wrestlers did well enough at the qualifying meet in Warden last weekend to advance to the regional competition in Kittitas starting on Friday. The accomplishment was unexpected for the first-year program and underscores the effort each Tiger has put in to get better and wrestle with intensity, head coach Lanny Adams said. "I'm on cloud nine," Adams said. "It's a very successful year for the kids. It was the kids who did it, not me. Hopefully, we'll come back with some...

  • Judith Henderson’s Wine & Country Living

    Feb 9, 2012

It is with great pride that I report to readers and fans of this column, that this is Wine and Country Living's 100th publication. I first met Imbert Matthee, then the new publisher at the Times, two years ago. After I left Foyer Magazine in 2007, my columns, The Valley Gourmet and Cellar Talk, considered by many to be the voice of the local grower and winemaker, I thought that would be the end of my writing about regional food and wine. Thanks to Matthee and his encouragement, Wine and Country Living has found a home at the Times, along with...

Glasby was accused of passing counterfeit $20s at Walla Walla businesses in November and was arrested by police after a 21-hour standoff in a Walla Walla trailer home park. Police have identified Glasby as a known gang member. Glasby entered not guilty pleas to three counts of forgery and one count of thirddegree theft in Walla Walla in early December. The forgery charges were felonies and the theft...

  • Council Denies First Utilities Rate Proposal

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Jan 26, 2012

WAITSBURG - A utility rate study that evaluated the cost of operating Waitsburg's sewer and water systems showed the city needs to increase its rates, but the city council said no to a proposal that would have raised rates by $14 a month over two years. Last Wednesday night, The Waitsburg City Council heard public comment on the utility rate increases. Not many of the large group of citizens remarked on the rate increases, but the sentiment was that the increases were high elsewhere in sales tax or car tab fees. City council members said they...

My passion for Chinese Stir-Fry cooking started as a young cook in San Francisco's China Town. As a student attending San Francisco State, I defrayed my expenses cooking in a North Beach Pasta shop, eventually joining a team of China Town chefs cooking Cantonese on Grant Street. My first task at the China cafe was sauce making. I fell in love with the magic and simplicity of Chinese sauce ingredients and how the squiggles made every dish different and defined. I was eventually accepted among the all men Chinese staff and given the nickname,...

WAITSBURG - Last week, the Waitsburg School Board voted unanimously to approve a new alternative learning program that will allow students to complete their education from the comfort of their home computers. Waitsburg Superintendent Dr. Carol Clarke said offering online learning is beneficial in two ways. One is to provide students who have dropped out of school an opportunity to continue their education, she said. The other is to provide families who home school their children another curriculum option. "It's one way to draw back students...

    Gary Hofer, The Times|Jan 19, 2012

The overall wheat market is in a follower mode right now. Corn was the primary driver of last Thursday's 37-cent collapse in Chicago. The USDA statisticians found 166 million bushels more corn than the average grain analyst had expected. When corn went limit down, wheat was bound to follow, as a significant bit of recent demand for wheat had been for feed to animals instead of expensive corn. Now the math works better for corn feeding in many locations. The drop in Chicago wheat triggered a quick 20- to 30-cent negative white wheat price...
