The wheat market, hostage this summer to drought in the corn belt, has returned to trading day-to-day on current events such as export sales (or lack thereof). Chicago wheat prices have declined as much as 90 cents per bushel in the few sessions since Aug. 10, but Tuesday's Egyptian purchase of 120,000 tonnes of wheat was from Russia and the Ukraine, only three days after a previous large Russian wheat sale to Egypt. Clearly U.S. wheat offers were too high. Apparently the earlier talk of Russian export restrictions was premature, even though...

I rresistible force meets immovable object - the old football cliché may be applied to the cur- rent wheat market; high emotion and heavy money on the move are making sparks and noise, but theses forces of buying and selling are, for the moment, balanced. For the last week, the price of wheat has been vibrating between $9.15 and $8.60. Granted, it has been a large vibe, with a 55-cent range from high to low, fully explored almost every day. But it is becoming better defined as the days pass. What this allows, for the chart traders among us,...

WAITSBURG - Waitsburg residents will see their sewer bill jump 90 cents, effective on their July bill. The city council approved the increase at the last meeting on July 18. City Administrator Randy Hinchliffe said the extra 90 cents added to the bills each month will pay for a loan for a sewer lining project. The project, to begin in about one month, will improve the city's terra cotta piping laid mostly in the 1930s. Hinchliffe said the current piping is cracking because of root damage and age. The damage is causing sewer backups and ot...

WAITSBURG - One of the two fire engines owned by Waitsburg's volunteer firefighters in Fire District 2 is 50 years old and not up to code. The city staff members and firefighters have been keeping their eyes out for surplus engines from other fire departments and were recently outbid on a used engine from Walla Walla. City Administrator Randy Hinchliffe said he learned in early July Waitsburg had been outbid on a 1981 fire engine from Walla Walla County Fire District 4. Hinchliffe said Waitsburg bid $8,000. The city has $14,000 in the ba...
I am officially 2012 Harvest Cook for Mead Ranch in Dayton. The bunk house on Mead Ranch is not what you might envision. Built in the 1930s, the house is comfortable and clean as a whistle. It comes with a modern kitchen, dining room, a cook's bedroom with claw-foot tub and plenty of refrigeration. The air conditioning keeps the house deliciously cool, welcoming field hands who dine on this chef's six-day-a-week menu. Tradition is everything to Skip and Julia Mead. The returning harvest crew has come to expect the family style meals served...

Ten Years Ago August 8, 2002 The Waitsburg Blockwatch is gaining momentum, if turnout at last Tuesday's barbecue in Preston Park is any indication. On display were several vehicles from the sheriff's office, the Waits- burg Ambulance Service, Walla Walla County Joint Fire District No. 2 and Waitsburg Fire Department, the Walla Walla Joint Emergency Services Unit (also known as SWAT) and others. The wheat market continues its wild ride, with the price of a Chicago wheat bushel declining 95 cents from its high at $9.47 in two trading sessions July 23 and 24, followed by 66 cents up and 29 cents down into Tuesday morning (and more volatility ahead). The heat and drought in the Midwestern U.S. has reduced the corn crop by something like one-third. The weather has moderated a bit, but the decline in crop condi- tion ratings continues. Corn and soybeans in the Western and northern corn belt (Minnesota, North Dakota) have escaped the...

The weekend: a summer barbecue with friends who came to town for the Mule Mania Parade. This second seasonal returning mule event, was held at the Columbia County Fair- grounds. The mules, which came from nine different states, stole our hearts navigating barrels, doing tricks and demon- strating their showmanship. Almost coquettish, flirting with anyone who walked by, I stood with my back to one dusty fella who proceeded to nibble at my hand with soft lippy kisses. I left the event asking, who wouldn't love a mule? They ride like a horse and...
