I noticed Dayton's organic gardener, Wild Bill, walking down Dayton Avenue this morning. I pulled up alongside of him, and we chatted about Seed Savers, an organization in the Midwest that saves and generates heirloom vegetable seeds. I ordered some Yukon Gold potatoes and a bunch of Ruby Red beets from Wild Bill, and headed for Wally, where I was to cook lunch and dinner for Beta House on Whitman Campus. Yes, I am cooking for the boys again, and just what is it they want me to cook? Meat and potatoes, of course! So, after I whipped up a qu...

This year, the Touchet Valley "theater family" is bringing back Meredith Willson's "The Music Man" for the theater's 10-year anniversary. And this time the show is a tribute to the director of that first production, Steve Edwards. Edwards was planning to direct this...

Driving back from cooking demos in Seattle this weekend, I was happy to see the Blue Mountains dusted in snow. I love this time of year, when local kitchens smell like cinnamon, and everyone dresses in layers of Black Watch flannel, Sherpa and tufted down. My Wine Guy, who's been out of town all week, met me at the door with a bottle of my all-time favorite: Ridge Vineyards, Santa Cruz Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Yum! However, I am impressed by one of our local winemakers, Richard Funk, who's produced a fantastic 2007 Cabernet Sau...

  • Not Just For Little Kids

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Nov 4, 2010

DAYTON - Often what's good for business is good for the whole town. One of Dayton's newest downtown business projects should turn out to be just that, its organizers say. Good for downtown, great for tourism and much appreciated by residents. A quick peek at the plan reveals one obvious segment of the local population likely to enjoy it. The brand new, 80 by 50 foot playground adjacent to the depot should be a hit with the kids. "There is no playground on the north side of town right now, so...

This morning the thermometer pushed 34 degrees. Burr! No wonder I felt a chill around my ankles! This is slow-food season, and today I am making a couple of family favorites: Black Bean Chili and Caramelized Acorn Squash Cake. At about 5 p.m., Wine Guy walked in the kitchen with a bottle of Sleight of Hand Winery's 2008 Magician Gewürztraminer, a blend of 85 percent Gewürztraminer and 15 percent Dry Riesling. Wine Guy jumps in to help with dinner, tossing together a wild greens salad with...

TUCANNON VALLEY- Another opening weekend of deer-hunting season in the Touchet Valley has come and gone. The numbers indicate that while the sport certainly hasn't decreased in popularity, it isn't growing much either. Many believe the long-term effects of the economic slump are to blame. But for Phyllis Rothauge, co-owner of The Last Resort Camp Store and Blue Mountains KOA Campground on Tucannon Road just inside the Columbia County line, it was still a crazy, busy weekend.
