  • Turner’s Turn

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Jan 6, 2011

WALLA WALLA - While he grew up in Southern California, John Turner remembers coming up for harvest and for Christmas to the Touchet Valley. It is, after all, whence his family hails. Turner's grandmother was Juanita Hofer, daughter of Friedrich Hofer, one of the area's homesteaders north of Prescott and also great-grandfather of Waitsburg's Gary Hofer, who taught Turner how to drive a tractor in the summers. As the newly sworn-in Sheriff of Walla Walla County, Turner comes full circle to these...

  • Analysis: Was It Bullying?

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Dec 29, 2010

In its Nov. 18 suspension letter to the three volleyball coaches and its Dec. 17 ruling upholding the suspension decision, the Waitsburg School District charges that Jessie Buehler, Katie Buehler and Tressa Robbins purposely placed an athlete in a position of being harassed, intimidated and bullied by her teammates. But the statements from team players on which the district's charges were based give a much more complex picture of the controversial team meeting of Nov. 13. It's much less clear...

While attending a champagne tasting last week in Manhattan, New York, I was blown away by the exceptional differences in tastes and styles of the all-French tasting. After a visit and dinner with associates, I returned to my room with the nagging thought: What about bubbly here in Washington state? As soon as I landed at the airport, I met with Chad Diltz, owner/winemaker at Tru Cellars, the only producer of sparkling wine in Walla Walla. I sampled his Blanc de Blanc Me'thode Champenoise NV, and I was stunned. No wine at the New York tasting co...

Ten Years Ago January 11, 2001 Frank Thomas, Jim Burres and Frank Thomas, members of the local Lewis Clark Bicentennial Committee, presented their banner to the Commercial Club for consideration to raise awareness of the Lewis Clark Bicentennial in 2006. The yellow Goretex banner with gold fringe depicts the design familiar from road signs with "Waitsburg, Washington" below the graphic of the two explorers. The overlying layer of haze over the valley recently broke Tuesday. Tuesday was bright and sunny but temperatures were brisk. Thanks to...

    Rosindee Thompson, The Times|Dec 29, 2010

WAITSBURG - New library manager Su Alexander has plenty of new ideas in store for the Weller Public Library, in downtown Waitsburg. Alexander, who took over as manager after Jan Cronkhite retired in October, has plans to make the library new and improved while retaining its historical aspects. Taking a page from her own personality, Alexander would like to make the library a nice, laid back place, where people of all ages can come, get cozy, read and relax. Her first line of action will be to mo...

I am a pear lover! That's right. I love a good winter pear, and what constitutes a good pear is simple: ripeness without bruising. I was in Andy's earlier today, and the produce clerk came around the corner with a box of beautiful Washington State Organic Pears unblemished! I was heading back to the barn to create a catering order for a customer who had ordered, "Salad for a Crowd," an item from the Flying Aprons Catering Menu, made of pears and other wintery foods. This salad is simply made. On four salad plates, line each in composed lettuces...

Ten Years Ago January 4, 2001 While the Booster Club is asking for the community's contributions of pictures and stories in their process of publishing a book on the last 100 years of football at Waitsburg High School, a Walla Walla man, Earl Roberge, has paired up with the retired former owner of Tidewater Barge Lines, Ray Hickey, to pen a book about dams. While Washington's unemployment rate jumped four-tenths of one percent to a 4.9 percent for the fourth November in a row, a budgeted 6 percent increase on personal and property taxes for...

  • Dayton Considers Security Cameras

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 23, 2010

DAYTON - Though the old story that teachers have eyes in the back of their heads turns out to be untrue, school officials in Dayton hope to keep a watchful "eye" on certain high-risk areas on school grounds with a new security camera system. "I hate security cameras," said Superintendent Doug Johnson. "But I'd rather make a couple thousand dollar investment in cameras than keep spending money on clean up." Vandalism at the Dayton School District has grown more frustrating over the last 18 months to two years, Johnson said. This year the distric...

The first winter snow recedes, and what do we find? Mushy gardens. So what now, weather person? Maybe more rain, wind, even another good dusting of snow? Are we experiencing global warming or just a mild winter? Even the Farmer's Almanac can't seem to make up its mind. Maybe it's too early to tell. I was home this weekend and pulled a box of bulbs from the basement where I usually store unplanted bulbs from the fall. Because we haven't had but one freeze this winter, I was able to dig in the earth and plant the straggling bulb. Now, I wait for...

Ten Years Ago December 28, 2000 County Road Foreman Jack Otterson retired this week after 30 ½ years of service. Otterson says the 1996 and 1997 area flooding was the "highlight" of his 16 years as road foreman. Although he and his seven-man crew were severely tested when waters raged through Waitsburg, there was a silver lining: County officials teamed with FEMA funding to build a new shop, which affords many efficiencies on higher ground. Scott and Michelle Huxoll of West Third Street were declared winners for the Christmas lighting display...
