  • Cardinals Start Round 2 With League Victories

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Jan 27, 2011

WAITSBURG - Neither Cardinals basketball team had much trouble with the Liberty Christian Patriots, beating them handily at Kison Court Friday night. But the wins had their significance since they marked the end of the first round of league match ups with WP still undefeated in the league. The Lady Cardinal s topped the Patriots 64-34. The points spread was already large enough during the first half to allow head coach Jerry Baker to bring out some of his younger players. "That was our best...

About 300 undaunted souls from southeast Washington participated in the event Saturday and raised $77,000 for the cause. Sooner or later, recruiting will begin for 2012. But what are you waiting for? • Plans Drawn Up For New Press Box Building

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Jan 27, 2011

WAITSBURG - The Cardinals Booster Club needs to raise at least $19,000 if it wants to break ground for a new press box and equipment storage building in late spring, according to members of the Waits- burg sports community. But the good news is that they have a plan for their goal and support seems to be building in the rest of the community. The proposal is already backed by the Waitsburg Booster Club, the WP Quarterback Club and the Waitsburg Lions Club. A group of coaches, boosters and fans...

  • Touchet Valley Rivals Meet Again

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Jan 27, 2011

DAYTON - The big question in the Touchet Valley this weekend: Could the Bulldogs trip up the Cardinals' unbroken winning streak in round two of league match-ups? Try as it might, Dayton was unable to take away either WP varsity team's undefeated status. Both Bulldogs teams succumbed to a stronger WP combine that has dominated the league since the start of the season. In a closer game than their first encounter at Waitsburg, the Lady Bulldogs lost to the Lady Cardinals 58-37 on their home court....

The Bluewood Alpine Race Team (BART) is one of seven EEYSL member teams and fielded 12 athletes at this year's event, which featured Giant Slalom races both Saturday, January 8, and Sunday, January 9. Despite being a small part of the total of 152 rac- ers competing, BART skiers finished well enough to set the team solidly in the middle of the team standings. The...

    Rosindee Thompson, The Times|Jan 20, 2011

WALLA WALLA - The Waitsburg-Prescott Cardinals and DeSales went head to head in a tough league game Saturday in Walla Walla. When it was all said and done, the Cardinals came out on top with a close win of 62-51. WP now stands 4-0 in 2B League boys' basketball action. "In the first half of the game we were a little stagnant on the offensive side, but we played a very solid first half defensively," said head coach T.J. Scott. The Cards were able to create an eight-point lead by disrupting the...

  • Bulldogs Taste Sweet Victory

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Jan 20, 2011

DAYTON - The Dayton Bulldogs took DeSales into overtime on Saturday and then slammed home a victory, beating this tough team 52-44 in the last four minutes of the game. DeSales, a league team who beat Dayton twice last year, gave the Bulldogs a run for their money. Dayton's free throws weren't getting in the basket, and DeSales advanced on the Bulldogs in the third quarter, gaining a seven-point lead. Dayton struggled to get back in the game. With just 20 seconds left on the clock, junior...

  • WP Girls Bowl Over Irish

    Rosindee Thompson, The Times|Jan 20, 2011

WALLA WALLA - The Lady Cardinals walked on to the Irish courts tied with the rival team 3-0 in the league Friday night. When WP walked away, they left with their heads held high as they took the lead 45-34 and now stand 4-0 in the league. "Any time you come down to DeSales and win a game, it is a big accomplishment," head coach Jerry Baker said. "Any time you play DeSales it is always going to be a battle." Baker knew what he was talking about after the game Friday night. "DeSales gave us the...

  • The Team That Can

Imbert Matthee and Dian McClurg, The Times|Jan 13, 2011

DAYTON - The Lady Bulldogs may have lost against Liberty Christian Saturday, but they now know they can win games because they did so twice in a row: against WWVA 41-37 on Thursday and against Lacrosse Washtucna during the holiday tournament. "I know we can play with any of them," head coach Scott Hudson said after Thursday's game against the Knights. "It wasn't pretty, but it was a win." For the men, the picture is different. They're a skilled team, know how to stay in the game despite some...

  • Seven Make All State

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Jan 13, 2011

SEATTLE - You may have missed it over the holidays. But almost three weeks after the football season ended, the 2010 Waitsburg-Prescott team reeled in more recordsetting recognition for their historical performance during the season. One Dayton Bulldog, Colton Bickelhaupt, also received statewide recognition for his efforts on a team that made it to the first round of the playoffs. Sports writers across the state voted to include six Cardinals in the Washington All- State poll, with two winning...

  • Cardinals Run Past Asotin

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Jan 13, 2011

WAITSBURG - Both Cardinals basketball teams succeeded this year where they failed last year. They beat top-ranked Asotin Friday and remained undefeated in the league this far into the season. They continued their winning streaks Saturday by trouncing the Mac-Hi Pioneers. The biggest test and first real challenge for the Lady Cardinals came at the start of the weekend against league rival Asotin. They edged out the Panthers 52-50 in a cliff hanger of a game that could have easily gone either...

Playing Wednesday, Dec. 29, against the 2B sports combine Lacrosse-Washtucna, the Bulldogs dominated on the board. Dayton stole the evening with a 45-28 win against the Tigercats. "We had everyone back (on the squad) for the first time all season," an excited head coach Scott Hudson said. "We did not shoot well at all, and we need to improve. We did,...

    Rosindee Thompson, The Times|Jan 6, 2011

TOUCHET - The Waitsburg Prescott boys started 2011 with a win against the Touchet Indians at their home court Tuesday night. "Touchet was a scrappy team," WP head coach TJ Scott said. "They caused us to fall back in the game." The Cardinals beat Touchet 52-30, making the boys varsity team 6-1 for the season. "Matthew Hamilton and Zach Bartlow both played great games," Scott said. "They helped keep us on top. Bartlow and Hamilton extended the fourth quarter that resulted in a pretty easy win."...

    Rosindee Thompson, The Times|Jan 6, 2011

TOUCHET - Waitsburg Prescott's Lady Cardinals are staying on the ball with their fourth win in a row after defeating the Touchet Indians Tuesday night. The girls are now 6-0. The Cardinals walked into the Indian's home court with their heads held high and left the same way. After a long game, the Lady Cardinals won 47-25. "It was a good win," WP head coach Jerry Baker said. "The defense was a little sloppy due to lack of practice, but the girls put forth great effort." Alyssa Hafen was one...

  • Boys Suffer Narrow Losses

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 23, 2010

ASOTIN - Dayton boys struggled to retain a winning edge in their last two away games against Waitsburg and Asotin over the weekend. Their heartbreaking twopoint 36-34 loss to the Cardinals Friday came with less than a minute before the end of the game. In Asotin on Saturday, the Panthers got a quick jump on the Bulldogs and the Dayton boys just couldn't keep up after that, trailing until the final whistle sealed Asotin's win 67-51. Panther Ben Servatius came out hot in the first quarter, shooting six for nine and scoring 14 points for Asotin....

  • Bulldogs Struggle

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 23, 2010

ASOTIN - Saturday night's game against the Lady Panthers was another loss for the Lady Bulldogs with a final score of 59-46, but it was an improvement over their defeat against WP Friday. Against WP's larger, more experienced team, the Lady Bulldogs fell 68-33. On Asotin's court, the Dayton girls had to push hard to keep up. Nicole Lambert led with 13 points, followed by Jessica Tate with eight. Both Samura Miller and McKayla Bickelhapt scored seven points. Zara Reynolds led Asotin with 14...

  • Cardinals Undefeated, Need “Greater Challenge”

    Rosindee Thompson, The Times|Dec 23, 2010

MILTON-FREEWATER - The lady Cardinals go undefeated after their first four games of the season, adding another win with their 55-21 defeat of the Mac-Hi Pioneers on Tuesday. Even though the girls played well, head coach Jerry Baker said he has a few things in mind that his team will work on before the Holiday Tournament coming up Dec. 28 and 29 in Helix. "We need to work on not allowing turnovers on our part," Baker said. "We need to review our ball-handling skills, man to man, and defensive skills." The girls' games so far have been pretty...

  • Cardinals Pick Up Head Of Steam

    Rosindee Thompson, The Times|Dec 23, 2010

MILTON-FREEWATER - The Cardinals are on a roll, winning their third matchup in a row Tuesday against the Mac-Hi Pioneers in a nonleague game that ended with a score of 59-23. WP only lost their first game of the season in a narrow 47-45 defeat against Weston-McEwen. Though they started off a little behind, the boys quickly caught up to the Pioneers Tuesday night and stayed ahead for the rest of the game. "Overall, it was the best game of the season for the boys," head coach TJ Scott said. The...

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 16, 2010

POMEROY - The Lady Bulldogs lost to the Pomeroy Pirates in a pre-season game in Pomeroy Tuesday evening, their fourth pre-season loss. The final score was 58-34. What started as a "really good game," according to head coach Scott Hudson, turned gloomy when the Pirates slammed an extra 11 points in the last two minutes of the first half. "The girls literally had meltdown," Hudson said. "And they just could not recover from it. We came out extremely flat in the second half." Before the half, Dayton was just six points behind. In the third quart...
