  • A Winning Attitude

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Aug 30, 2012

DAYTON - Practices are underway and after a weekend romp at Camp Wooten, the Dayton soccer team is preparing for the coming season with a winning attitude and a talented team. The team has already kicked the season off with a clinic, practices and a trip to Camp Wooten, where the team worked together and, most importantly, started to bond and mesh as a team, head coach DJ Frame said. There are 25 students signed up for the team this year, nine girls and 16 boys, 19 of which are returning fr...

  • Dogs Will Need To Play ‘Iron Man Football’

    Dan Groom, The Times|Aug 30, 2012

DAYTON - The 2011- 2012 school year was Dayton's most successful year on the boys' side of athletics in quite some time, with a state tourney appearance in basketball and a near-miss in football. The same leading players- mostly seniors-filled out the rosters of both teams. Now that the likes of skilled players Colton Bickelhaupt, Hayden Fullerton and Joey Schlachter, and massive lineman Kroft Sunderland have moved on, this year's admittedly short-handed, 23-man Dayton football squad will...

  • WP Ready To Defend State Title

    Dan Groom, The Times|Aug 30, 2012

WAITSBURG -- Waitsburg-Prescott lost six award-winning seniors from its undefeated and state championship- winning 2011 football squad. With the loss of so much skill, experience, and size on the lines, at quarterback, and at key defensive positions, it is perfectly reasonable to assume 2012 will be a rebuilding year for the Cardinals. But your assumption would be wrong according to WP head coach Jeff Bartlow. "We had a big junior class that played significant roles last year in the ch...

  • Dayton Boosters Host Successful Banquet

    The Times|Aug 23, 2012

DAYTON -- The Dayton Booster Club held a back-toschool spaghetti feed and silent auction on Saturday, Aug. 18, to get a jump start on funding Dayton groups, clubs and teams for the 2012-2013 school year. Booster Club Secretary Melanie Mings said the event went well. About 180 people purchased dinner at the event and there were take-out orders too, Mings said. "It was a great success," she said. Mings said there were silent auction items donated and sold and the turnout helped bring money in to the club to help support Dayton School District gro...

  • Coach’s Corner

    Jeff Bartlow, Guest Column|Aug 23, 2012

WAITSBURG -- Offensively speaking, the 2011 Cardinals were hard to beat and we were at the top of our game a year ago. In my 13 years as head coach, we had our no. 1 scoring offense (41.1 per game) and no. 4 total offense (385.5 yards per game). It was our no. 2 passing offense (171.5 per game) and no. 4 rush- ing offense (214 yards per game). In addition to that, we did not turn the ball over with a (+16) turnover margin (only 2010 was better at +20). Mistake-free foot- ball and talented kids with some creative coaching all added up to a 14-0...

WAITSBURG -- The 2012 schedule is arguably the hardest schedule we have had in recent years. Our senior football players total 15 guys, maybe more, and we will need all of those seniors if we expect to make another run deep into the playoffs. We have 15 seniors for sure and depending on Jubilee Youth Ranch's participation, we could have up to 17 or 18 seniors. This has to be one of the largest senior classes we have ever had at Waitsburg. Oddly enough, with the number of players that we have lost over the last two years, only four of those...

WP cheerleaders Heidi Miller, Chelsea Brannock, Margaret Potolicchio, Yajaira Barragau, Blanca Quiroz, Kendra Roberts, Bailey Edwards, Samantha Moss, Katy Hofer, Maddy Witt and coach Vicki Hamann enjoyed two days of cheer camp at Waitsburg High School last Monday and Tuesday....

Mark Hauck, the director of athletics and student activities at Jubilee Youth Ranch, was selected by the WP...

  • Dayton Boosters Looking For Members

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Aug 9, 2012

DAYTON - The Dayton Booster Club is gearing up for back to school with a banquet and a push to encourage lo- cal residents to become new members. The club's back-to-school spaghetti dinner and silent auction will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug 18, in the multi- purpose room. The event will feature themed baskets and an assortment of items for auction, Booster Club Secretary Melanie Mings said. The themed baskets include a car cleaning kit basket, a cooking-themed basket and a fishing themed basket among others. As far as the items, Mings...

WAITSBURG -- Any- time you win a state championship, there is a big target on your back. The success of our team one year ago allows other teams a huge incentive to be able to play and defeat the state champs. Coming off this huge year with a 14-game winning streak and state championship, we will have our work cut out for us. Our league is arguably the best in the state and it will be no different this year. DeSales lost only five seniors and Tri- City Prep only two. Both look to be a huge challenge to us this fall. And TOR will be the best...

  • Theirs To Keep

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Aug 9, 2012

WAITSBURG - When a high school sports team wins a state championship, the trophy to mark that accomplishment only gets to stay at the team's school as long as the team holds the title. This is where Waitsburg's Brian Segraves comes in. Segraves, who owns Coy- ote Custom Cabinets in Waitsburg, makes replicas of these state trophies so the schools can hold onto a memento of the victory forever. WP won two state cham- pionships in 2011 - state football and state soccer. Head WP football coach Jeff...

WP Head Football Coach Jeff Bartlow Believes Last Season's Freshmen Will Step Up On The Field This Fall W AITSBURG -- The 2011 run in football last fall was a great run and one the communities of Waitsburg and Prescott, as well as Jubilee Christian, will remember for a long time to come. In fact, the last three years are really remarkable going, 35-3, over that span. Numerous school records, both team and individual, were broken. And, when you graduate 12 seniors in 2010 and then eight more in 2011 and win that many games (26-1 over those two...

  • New ADs: DeRuwe And Wooderchak

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Aug 2, 2012

WAITSBURG - Sue DeRuwe and Stephanie Wooderchak will share athletic director duties in 2012-13. To cut costs, the Waitsburg Prescott athletic combine has switched from the single athletic director method to having two staff members share the duties part-time. The change was made at the end of the 2011-12 school year and was the result of the tight budgets both districts face, school officials say. "It's another way we can cut some costs," said Waitsburg Superintendent Dr. Carol Clarke. "It...

  • XC Coach Hoping For Banner Season

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Aug 2, 2012

WAITSBURG - The first WP cross country practice will be held Aug. 20 and head coach Joanna Lanning couldn't be more excited. This year, Lanning is expecting 10 to 12 athletes to turn out for the cross country season, including two Jubilee Youth Ranch athletes from Africa. "I'm pretty excited about our possibilities," Lanning said. "Last year, we couldn't even field a boys team." Although Lanning isn't expecting any high-school level female runners this season, she is expecting to have more than...

  • Dayton Hires New Athletic Director

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Jul 19, 2012

DAYTON -- Rick Hamil- ton, former WP head soccer coach, was appointed by the school board to the athletic di- rector position for the Dayton School District on Wednesday, July 11. Dayton's former athletic director, Jack Smiley, passed away in early May. Hamilton begins his new position in August. Hamilton was the head WP soccer coach in 2010-11 and after the season he transferred to Arizona for a job opportu- nity. Dayton Superintendant Doug Johnson said Hamilton is notable because he worked...

  • WP, Dayton Grads Shine In All-Star Game

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Jul 5, 2012

YAKIMA - Being head coach for the East football team in the Earl Barden Classic all-star football game on June 23 was a career highlight for WP head football coach Jeff Bartlow. The annual game, which puts East side athletes against West side athletes in one all-star event, was six months in the making. After leading WP to the state football title in December, Bart- low said he found out he was selected to be the head coach of the East side team for this year's big match-up in Yakima. But, he...

On Aug. 10, he is off to Metlakatla, Alaska, near Ketchikan, to teach physical education, serve as an athletic director and continue his coaching career. Scott said he loves the Prescott...

  • Annual Valley Junior Golf Program Growing

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Jun 28, 2012

DAYTON -- A burst of rain dampened day two of the ju- nior golf lessons hosted by the Dayton Ladies group last Tues- day, but coordinator Evelyn Himmelberger and instructor Max Reinland won't let the weather waterlog their spirits. The free five-day program at the Touchet Valley Golf Course focuses on putting, chipping, driving etiquette and safety for kids ages 7-18. "It's a lot of fun and we all enjoy it," Himmelberger said. "Max is a marvelous, marvel- ous guy. The kids listen to him and...

Acevedo, Leroue Injured At Summer Camp, WP Goes 3-1-1 In Competitions WAITSBURG - The WP football team attended Central Washington University Football Camp June 16 and 17 in Cheney. Football Camp was a shorter affair this year because the coaching staff had to leave early to coach at the All-State game in Yakima. The team had a number of kids who could not par- ticipate at camp for various reasons, which happens on occasion when it is an over- night trip like this year. The past five years WP went to the Tri City camp and trav- eled back and...

  • Jubilee Athletes Making Huge Contributions

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Jun 21, 2012

PR ESCOTT - Jubilee Youth Ranch students have been participating in WP sports for about six years now and the school is planning to expand its offerings to possibly three sports for the upcoming fall season - football, cross country and soccer. Not only will this provide a wider variety for the Jubilee athletes in sports activities, but it means WP coaches may have more talent on their hands than ever before. Mark Hauck, the student activities and athletics director at Jubilee Youth Ranch, said...

  • WP Athletes Celebrate Successes

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Jun 7, 2012

And while the WP Tiger baseball team didn't come away with any state trophies this year, they had many moments of their own to cheer about. The athletes and their families gathered at Waitsburg Elementary School for food and awards to top off a successful season. Track Head coach Jeff Bartlow said he had about 50 athletes turn out for track this year and he said each of them made the season memorable for him. "It's my fav...

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Jun 7, 2012

DAYTON -- The Dayton spring sports teams gathered together around collaged photo placemats and desserts to celebrate the three teams' work both during the season and in post-season competition at the state level. All three head coaches echoed sentiments of improvement through the season, which played a role in two of the teams making it to state competitions. Track and field coach Shawn Magee said he saw major improvements especially in the athletes who competed at the state level. Some of the t...
