FREE SHOOTING DAYS DAYTON - The Co- lumbia County Shooting Association will be offering free days to sight in your rifles in preparation for the coming hunting season at no cost to the public. Free days will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 15, from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 23 and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sept. 24. DAYTON - Dayton's new- est city councilman, Dain Nysoe, has been interested in gov- ernment since he was a page for the Senate in Olympia when he was 12 years old. Nysoe was appointed to the city council at the Monday, Sept. 10 meeting. DAYTON - The Dayton School Board voted Wednes- day night to hire a full-time para-professional to work with the now too-large fourth grade class and leave the kindergar- ten classes at half-day status. The decisions were based on recommendations by Superintendent Doug Johnson. DAYTON - The newest member of the Columbia County Sheriff's Office is eager to learn and determined to do right in Dayton. DAYTON - The Blue Moun- tain Heritage Society joined forces with Walla Walla Macy's for the second time on Saturday, Aug. 25, as part of Macy's annual "Shop for a Cause" event. The heritage society sold 26 tickets for the event, Mountain Heritage Society member Elizabeth Thorn said. Tickets sold for the heritage society benefit the Smith Hollow School restoration project. DAYTON - City plan- ning in Dayton is no longer being handled by Columbia County and now the posi- tion is open to qualified applicants. The city of Dayton listed the job posting last week, moving forward with the city-employed position. Short term regular city planning had previously been provided by Columbia County for $8,000 a year. DAYTON - Despite what may seem like a surge in the vehicle prowls in Dayton, the Columbia County Sheriff's Office reports the incidences of car break-ins are down from last year. Sheriff Walt Hessler said the numbers are decreasing because of the office's dili- gence on the streets.
