Representative Walsh has sponsored HB 2516, concerning legalizing same- sex marriages in Washington State. Nearly two thirds of the 16th District made their intentions absolutely clear when they rejected Referendum 71 (R-71) in 2009. They did so again when they elected a Republican to represent them in the state legislature last election. Furthermore, only one quarter of one percent of Washington citizens have taken advantage of the provisions of R-71 since its inception. As a constituent, I am outraged that my representative has taken this...
Excerpts are from "Chief Joseph Country Land of the Nez Perce" by Bill Gulick, 1985 Quoting the plaque on the Lewis and Clark Trail State Park on Highway 12: "In early May of 1806, Lewis and Clark passed through here on their return from the Pacific Ocean." On April 18, 1806, Clark wrote: "Early this morning, I was awoken by an Indian man of the Chopunuish (Nez Perce) Nation who informed me that he lived in the neighborhood of our horses. This man delivered me a bag of powder and ball, which he had picked up this morning at the place the goods...
About Needs & Good Deeds I t's always great to see high school students use their senior projects to make connections in the community. Especially, when they help younger children in the community learn new skills and gain confidence. This week, our hats are off to Danica Proctor-DePaulo, an 18-year-old senior at Dayton High School. During January, this veteran member of the Dayton cheer squad held three practices after school for about 25 girls and boys who learned cheers, motions, jumps and a...
We're carrying a story this week about an incident that occurred at Dayton High School in October and still has reverberations in the community today. As reported on the front page, an alleged threat to at least one student and the reported subsequent discovery of a weapon on a freshman who allegedly made the threat a week earlier concerned some parents and students in the district. Naturally so. But how serious was it really? It might be impossible to gauge because of privacy laws that limit the district's ability to share information. Many...
In the Feb. 2 issue of the Times, a spot photo depicted tiny dancers on page 4. Because of a reporting error, the dancers were misidentified. The dancers were part of a mini cheer camp held during the halftime of a recent Dayton High School basketball game....
Hear ing the negative comments made toward schools and education while participating in Representative Terry Nealey's phone town hall this week was an eye opener. The quantity and variety of bills introduced during the current legislative session also seem to confirm dissatisfaction with education. It is amazing how many suggestions there are to "improve" our school system. It made me realize not all citizens in our region of the state are as proud of their schools as those of us in Waitsburg. Reading the front page of the Feb. 3...
Honoring Our Booker Staff DAYTON - A generous gift from the family of the late Dale Hutchens means the staff members of the Booker Rest Home will have new equipment to make their work easier and more efficient. Hutchens, a former member of the board of directors for the Columbia County Health System from 1974 to 1987, passed away after spending more than 4 years at the Booker Rest Home. On his behalf, his family provided Booker with nearly $8,000. "It was to express gratitude to help purchase...
That's right. Pause your Halo game for a minute and put the controller down. Oh, we just remembered, you probably don't read the newspaper, though we like to think you check out the high school sports section once in a while. Okay, so Mom and Dad, please do us a favor and hand this edition to your young teenage son or daughter and ask them to read this. Thanks. Kids: We have a message for you. It's simple: Don't mess up and if you do, make amends, learn your lesson and become a better person for it. You'll notice several stories in this week's...

In the Jan. 19 edition of the Times, a story on Dayton School District's afterschool program incorrectly listed the funding provider because of a source's error. The after-school program has been funded the past five years through a competitive federal grant acquired by Educational Service District 123 in Tri Cities....
This letter will serve as a strong endorsement of both the M & O four-year levy and the Capital Levy for Technology and School Improvements, on the ballot for Feb. 14. As a retired WSU professor (15 years in the College of Veterinary Medicine and 12.5 years in the College of Agriculture), I have had the unique opportunity to have former Dayton students and sons and daughters of former Dayton students in my classes over the years. In addition, over the past 4 years of my retirement, I have been privileged to assist some of your elementary teache...
I want to personally thank the parents, community members and patrons of the Prescott School District for their commitment to kids. Your continued support of the district's Maintenance and Operations Levy has proven to be critical to the district's ability to offer our students a wellrounded academic program and an exciting athletic and activities program. On Feb. 14, voters in the Prescott School District will again have the opportunity to demonstrate their support for and pride in the district by voting "YES" for the Prescott School District...
Like most Americans, I am conservative, Christian and vote Republican. As a member of this "silent majority," I tend to watch from the sidelines, politically. The last city council meeting is a case in point. The council had previously declared the need to raise funds for city operations, whether through taxes, a fee added to vehicle tabs or both. Like many, I waited until the last council meeting to attend and voice my opinion. I support the city council (the mayor, council members and the city administrator). I am thankful for what Mayor Walt...
To the Editor, I'd like to add my thoughts to two excellent earlier letters concerning the Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v FEC and the matter of "corporate personhood." The affect of Citizens United and the rise of "super pacs" has taken a wrecking ball to democracy in the United States by opening the floodgates of money in corporate and union treasuries to fund elections. It's a danger people from the right, left and center should agree upon. Simply put, corporations (and unions, though they have far less money) can spend without...
DAYTON - In December, Dayton High School student Carlos Oribio, on behalf of his school's Students Helping Each Other club, told the Dayton City Council he was concerned about his peers' attitudes toward alcohol. Oribio and the club are not the only ones concerned. In fact, Columbia County has an entire group of volunteers who are on the same page with Oribio and are working to alter the community and focus on raising healthy kids who will say no to drugs and alcohol. The Columbia County...
For months, the undefeated WP Cardinals football players were the talk of the town, the pride of the community and role models for younger aspiring kids. Their athletic adventure took them all the way from summer football camp to the state title game at the Tacoma Dome late last year. In the same manner, the Prescott and Vista Hermosa communities went wild about their WP Tigers soccer team, which also won a state title and sent five players to the all-state team. We now see a surge of community excitement around the Dayton Bulldog basketball...
White wheat bids in Portland for late September (4 months ago) were close to $6.30 per bushel (Chicago was at $6.40). This week the bid is about $6.33 for white (Chicago $6.16). Wheat prices have accomplished very little in those months in the way of a trend, and there is little in the fundamental supply and demand balance sheet that appears large enough to trigger a serious breakout unless weather becomes really extreme ahead of harvest. There may be some who would argue from a more positive position, maybe based on a review of the difference...
Waitsburg Memorial Scholarship Fund In Loving Memory of Sara Leid Heggen From: Reade & Mary Ferguson, Rick, Terry & Heather Ferguson...
I am supporting the Dayton School District M & O Levy that will be on the February ballot. I understand that the M & O levy is a replacement of the existing levy that we currently are paying. I realize that we all would like to pay fewer taxes. State funding, including funding for primary education, is being reduced as the state attempts to balance the current deficit. However, we cannot afford to let our local school system suffer deterioration due to lack of funding. Our school system needs to educate our students to acquire a competent...
Randy Hinchliffe's letter in the Jan. 19 issue of this publication was appreciated for the accurate facts presented without emotional language. For citizens upset about actual or potential changes the easiest target is often the faces in city hall. From having served in the past, I know that Waitsburg is small enough that the mayor and council members often get an earful on the streets, as well. More citizens should volunteer for the experience! Thanks to the council for listening to concerns expressed at the Jan. 18 meeting regarding the...
Voters living in Dayton have been keenly aware of the important role public education plays in the life of a community since its founding. Historical records indicate Dayton was among the first of Washington's communities to support public education and has continued to do so by supporting local school levy measures. There exists in the community an understanding that a strong and vibrant school system is a key part of a strong and vibrant community. I am passionately encouraging voters to continue their support for education by voting "YES"...
I encourage you (all) to vote "Yes" for the Dayton School District's Maintenance and Operations (M & O) levy. This is a replacement levy to keep vital programs. We all know it is a tough time economically, but we can't short change our kids. The financial cuts the school district has already made have been painful. They have taken their share of cuts so now we need to do our part to support them. We can't see our school go backwards even further. We are fortunate to have great leadership in our schools and can be assured that our money will be...
