Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley

Dear Editor,

Like most Americans, I am conservative, Christian and vote Republican. As a member of this "silent majority," I tend to watch from the sidelines, politically. The last city council meeting is a case in point.

The council had previously declared the need to raise funds for city operations, whether through taxes, a fee added to vehicle tabs or both. Like many, I waited until the last council meeting to attend and voice my opinion.

I support the city council (the mayor, council members and the city administrator). I am thankful for what Mayor Walt and Gwen and the council are doing for Waitsburg.

Stating that, I scratch my head with the recent "mow your lawn or we'll shut your water off" and the "silence your rooster" ordinances. The Bible states "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again, there is nothing new under the sun."

Even though it states "will be done again" my thinking is this: the Waitsburg Territorial Charter was established in 1886. This being 2012, surely, every base, ordinance-wise, has been covered. A moratorium on ordinances seems reasonable.

Additionally, the council should reconsider their recent criticisms and accusations of theft leveled against Clyde Burdine. Both parties have benefi ted by their relationship.

Moving on, city councils may come and city councils may go. But one constancy, here lately, has been Randy Hinchliffe. I admire Randy. He was born a Waitsburg man, is intelligent, tall, has a nice head of hair and wants the job. How can you beat a six-way combination like that? Regardless, Randy is always prepared for the council meetings. Ready with all facts and figures surrounding any issue raised during the meeting.

Finally, the citizens of Waitsburg are a population of proud individuals. Like all individuals, they are concerned about the deficit, rising prices, taxes and fees. Long before I appeared on the scene, they built the city of Waitsburg. The citizens will see to it that the city continues long after I'm gone. A vehicle tab fee may be out of the questions, but I believe they would support a sales tax increase, when the need is properly explained. Waitsburg, what a great city!
