That's right. Pause your Halo game for a minute and put the controller down. Oh, we just remembered, you probably don't read the newspaper, though we like to think you check out the high school sports section once in a while. Okay, so Mom and Dad, please do us a favor and hand this edition to your young teenage son or daughter and ask them to read this. Thanks. Kids: We have a message for you. It's simple: Don't mess up and if you do, make amends, learn your lesson and become a better person for it. You'll notice several stories in this week's...

In the Jan. 19 edition of the Times, a story on Dayton School District's afterschool program incorrectly listed the funding provider because of a source's error. The after-school program has been funded the past five years through a competitive federal grant acquired by Educational Service District 123 in Tri Cities....
This letter will serve as a strong endorsement of both the M & O four-year levy and the Capital Levy for Technology and School Improvements, on the ballot for Feb. 14. As a retired WSU professor (15 years in the College of Veterinary Medicine and 12.5 years in the College of Agriculture), I have had the unique opportunity to have former Dayton students and sons and daughters of former Dayton students in my classes over the years. In addition, over the past 4 years of my retirement, I have been privileged to assist some of your elementary teache...
I want to personally thank the parents, community members and patrons of the Prescott School District for their commitment to kids. Your continued support of the district's Maintenance and Operations Levy has proven to be critical to the district's ability to offer our students a wellrounded academic program and an exciting athletic and activities program. On Feb. 14, voters in the Prescott School District will again have the opportunity to demonstrate their support for and pride in the district by voting "YES" for the Prescott School District...
Like most Americans, I am conservative, Christian and vote Republican. As a member of this "silent majority," I tend to watch from the sidelines, politically. The last city council meeting is a case in point. The council had previously declared the need to raise funds for city operations, whether through taxes, a fee added to vehicle tabs or both. Like many, I waited until the last council meeting to attend and voice my opinion. I support the city council (the mayor, council members and the city administrator). I am thankful for what Mayor Walt...
To the Editor, I'd like to add my thoughts to two excellent earlier letters concerning the Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v FEC and the matter of "corporate personhood." The affect of Citizens United and the rise of "super pacs" has taken a wrecking ball to democracy in the United States by opening the floodgates of money in corporate and union treasuries to fund elections. It's a danger people from the right, left and center should agree upon. Simply put, corporations (and unions, though they have far less money) can spend without...
DAYTON - In December, Dayton High School student Carlos Oribio, on behalf of his school's Students Helping Each Other club, told the Dayton City Council he was concerned about his peers' attitudes toward alcohol. Oribio and the club are not the only ones concerned. In fact, Columbia County has an entire group of volunteers who are on the same page with Oribio and are working to alter the community and focus on raising healthy kids who will say no to drugs and alcohol. The Columbia County...
For months, the undefeated WP Cardinals football players were the talk of the town, the pride of the community and role models for younger aspiring kids. Their athletic adventure took them all the way from summer football camp to the state title game at the Tacoma Dome late last year. In the same manner, the Prescott and Vista Hermosa communities went wild about their WP Tigers soccer team, which also won a state title and sent five players to the all-state team. We now see a surge of community excitement around the Dayton Bulldog basketball...
White wheat bids in Portland for late September (4 months ago) were close to $6.30 per bushel (Chicago was at $6.40). This week the bid is about $6.33 for white (Chicago $6.16). Wheat prices have accomplished very little in those months in the way of a trend, and there is little in the fundamental supply and demand balance sheet that appears large enough to trigger a serious breakout unless weather becomes really extreme ahead of harvest. There may be some who would argue from a more positive position, maybe based on a review of the difference...
Waitsburg Memorial Scholarship Fund In Loving Memory of Sara Leid Heggen From: Reade & Mary Ferguson, Rick, Terry & Heather Ferguson...
I am supporting the Dayton School District M & O Levy that will be on the February ballot. I understand that the M & O levy is a replacement of the existing levy that we currently are paying. I realize that we all would like to pay fewer taxes. State funding, including funding for primary education, is being reduced as the state attempts to balance the current deficit. However, we cannot afford to let our local school system suffer deterioration due to lack of funding. Our school system needs to educate our students to acquire a competent...
Randy Hinchliffe's letter in the Jan. 19 issue of this publication was appreciated for the accurate facts presented without emotional language. For citizens upset about actual or potential changes the easiest target is often the faces in city hall. From having served in the past, I know that Waitsburg is small enough that the mayor and council members often get an earful on the streets, as well. More citizens should volunteer for the experience! Thanks to the council for listening to concerns expressed at the Jan. 18 meeting regarding the...
Voters living in Dayton have been keenly aware of the important role public education plays in the life of a community since its founding. Historical records indicate Dayton was among the first of Washington's communities to support public education and has continued to do so by supporting local school levy measures. There exists in the community an understanding that a strong and vibrant school system is a key part of a strong and vibrant community. I am passionately encouraging voters to continue their support for education by voting "YES"...
I encourage you (all) to vote "Yes" for the Dayton School District's Maintenance and Operations (M & O) levy. This is a replacement levy to keep vital programs. We all know it is a tough time economically, but we can't short change our kids. The financial cuts the school district has already made have been painful. They have taken their share of cuts so now we need to do our part to support them. We can't see our school go backwards even further. We are fortunate to have great leadership in our schools and can be assured that our money will be...
I would like to thank the citizens of Dayton for their past support of our school levies. It is no accident that our town is a great place to live. We are blessed to have many residents who have worked diligently over the years to create a place that people want to visit and live. The appeal of our community is the sum of many features. We are fortunate to have a welcoming downtown, a lovely park and swimming pool, library, hospital with emergency services, ski resort, and so much more. These are the things that attract families and businesses...
The citizens of Dayton need to pass the school levies to keep our youth receiving the best education possible. Dayton students have been excelling in the Washington State standardized tests for many years. As an example, Dayton's 10th grade science students were ranked no. 2 in the state two years ago and continue to be 20 percent above the state average. To obtain these high academic levels, it has been a collaboration of strong administration, great teachers and young people who want to be the best. For Dayton schools to maintain this...
We arrived early on the bus from Bainbridge Island. The Crystal Mountain parking was already starting to fill up. Through the wind and driving snow, hundreds of skiers were arriving at the base of the giant mountain to enjoy several feet of new snow that had fallen at the tail end of last week's winter storm. I had agreed to chaperone my son and nearly 20 other teenagers who take the ski bus to the large resort in the shadow of Mount Rainier every week. It was my turn to be the responsible adult, make sure the kids all got back on the bus and...
The Prescott Christmas Group passed out boxes. We the group are rewarded many times over. One is by thanking the donors Tom Archer's Farm, Tuxedo bar & Grill, Pat Hermann's Welding and Machine, Broetje's Orchard, Milan Linkletter, Sally Eggers, Sharon Smith and Richard Cooper. Second, the ones who received the Christmas boxes. Their smiles and appreciation from them was rewarding enough. Happy New Year to all from all of us. Pat Hermanns Prescott...
Dear Editor: As the Administrator for the City of Waitsburg, I would like to address Mr. Ming's letter about the city. First, the city has not yet implemented either a car tab or sales tax increase. If implemented, however, the city would only be asking for a $10 car tab fee on vehicles registered in the city limits or a 1/10 of 1 percent sales tax increase (which has to be approved by the citizens of Waitsburg); not both, and not $20 and 2/10 of 1 percent as Mr. Ming's implies. Our preferred method would be the sales tax increase, as it would...
Below is an excerpt from"Chief Joseph Country, Land of the Nez Perce" by Bill Gulick, 1985. "Inside the Lewis and Clark State Park, there is a plaque that states: In early May of 1806, Lewis and Clark passed through here on their return from the Pacific Ocean heading East and they would complete their epoch making journey in St. Louis Sept. 23. While in the region, the hungry men ate cow parsnip and doc for lack of better provisions. Since they (the Nez Perce Indians) accepted the environment as they found it and did not try to alter it, food...
OLYMPIA -- They may not qualify to attend an R-rated movie, but soon 16-year-olds in Washington State could register to vote. Register? Yes. Actually vote? No. That civic privilege starts at age 18. A bill to extend advanced voter registration to 16 year olds has been introduced in the legislature this session and the House Committee on State Government and Tribal Affairs met Jan. 12 to listen to public testimony on the proposal. No one in the affected age group offered comments. The propos ed...
