Tom and Anita Baker will observe their fiftieth wedding anniversary Saturday afternoon, Aug. 18, at an old-fashioned picnic at the Bruce House from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will be hosted by their family: Charlie, Patty, Tom, Molly, Daniel and Emilie Baker; Peggy, Mike and Anthony Henry; Loyal, Kathy, Whitney, Matthew and Morgan Baker. Tom Baker, Fort Morgan, Co., and Mry Anita Bridwell, Denver, were married December 23, 1951, in Denver, while she was in college at the University of Colorado. The newlyweds moved to Pittsburgh where Tom attended Carnegie Tech, graduating in 1953. They made their home in Denver for ten years before deciding to make their home in a small town doing the work he loved. They moved to Waitsburg in 1963, with plans to buy The Times from Carl and Virginia Dilts.

Fifty Years Ago

August 12, 1976

Five members of the Amity Art Club were present at the meeting of the Waitsburg Historical Society Board on Monday night at which time they presented the recently completed Bicentennial Quilt to the Society. Aleta Combs, retiring president, made the presentation along with the other retiring officers, Agnes Packer, vice-president, and Mae Weaver, sec'y-treas. All the ladies were present, as well as Mrs. James Roberts of Portland. The quilt which is composed of blocks appliqued with local landmarks done by club members and area residents. It is centered with a colorfully embroidered cake flour sack from the Preston-Shaffer Mill, the official Seal of the City of Waitsburg, done in embroidery.

August 17, 1951

Bert Symmonds left Monday for Bethany, Mo. to attend the National Meeting of Soil Conservation specialists. Mr. Symmonds is production manager of S & S Soil Saver Mfg. Co. in Waitsburg.

Miss Mary Shaffer entertained the 1950 Fair Farmerettes at the home of her parents on Wednesday. Miss Shaffer attended Cottery College last year and will attend Whitman College this fall.

One Hundred Years Ago

August 20, 1926

Louis A. Dyar of Wilbur, Wash. the attorney taking over the practice of the late S. H. Cutting, took charge of the law office in the First National Bank Building Monday morning.

Bruce Burkhart, grandson of Mrs. Addie Bruce and who has been working on the Hobart Bruce ranch during the summer harvest season, returned to his home in Wenatchee Tuesday.

Judge H. V. Grubbe observed his 78th birthday Monday. Friends presented him with a box of fine cigars so he indulged in an extra smoke or two permitting us to smoke a cigar with him. The Judge is one of the two surviving members of Burnside Post G.A.R. and is still a pretty spry old rooster.

August 23, 1901

Miss Mabel Morgan and Miss Zula Bruce gave a party in honor of Miss Margaret Jones Friday at 4 o'clock. The party was in the nature of a farewell to Miss Margaret who is moving to Walla Walla with her parents, Prof. and Mrs. I. O. Jones.

Cards were issued this week announcing the approaching marriage of Miss Lenna Smith and Mr. Lavern Bartlett of Walla Walla on Sept. first. Miss Smith is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Smith, prominent citizens of our town.

The young son of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley McFarland was badly burned about the face last Friday by upsetting a glass of hot jelly on his head.
