First girl wrestler for the Cardinals

Feb. 20 – Karissa Potts made Cardinal history by joining the H.S. wrestling team. Coach Lash LaRue described Potts as a pleasure to work with and hoped other girls would join the team the following season.

Former City Hall building sale closes

April 10 – Waitsburg City Council accepted Chet Childers' second offer for Waitsburg's former city hall property. The $130,000 sale closed on April 7. Childers said he looked forward to learning more about the building and the town as he looks for a project that will honor both.

Dayton's Memorial Day Rodeo saved

May 22 - The future of a Memorial Day rodeo was uncertain as a dispute over control of Dayton Days Inc. remained unresolved. Loyal and Charlotte Baker worked with the Columbia County Board of Commissioners and secured the fairgrounds to host a Memorial Day rodeo. To accommodate a restriction on the use of the name "Dayton Days," the annual city celebration was renamed the Historical Dayton Days Jackpot Rodeo and Parade.

Dayton P.E.O celebrated its 100th Anniversary

June 6 - The Dayton P.E.O Chapter BJ celebrated its 100th Anniversary with an exhibit and reception in June. Cathy Lee-Haight organized the month-long exhibit at the Historical Depot Museum on the history of the local chapter.

Flag dedication and July 4th celebration at the Bruce Museum

July 10 - This year, the Patriot Parade ended at the Bruce House lawn for a flag dedication. The American Legion Auxiliary donated the flag, a new flagpole, and a plaque to the Waitsburg Historical Society. Waitsburg Scout Troop 337 raised the new flag in challenging wind conditions on July 4.

New photographer at The Times

July 31 - Dayton resident Juno Kerr had to drive past Harting Grade Fire emergency responders on July 25. After returning home, she captured photos of the fire from her vantage point safely across the valley. Kerr is now a staff photographer for The Times.

67th Salmon BBQ

September 25 - The Waitsburg Lions Club served 520 happy diners at the Don Thomas building on September 21. New diners come out for the perfectly cooked fish and side dishes; they return for the socializing and the food.

Dayton engineer nationally recognized

September 25 - Dayton resident Ryan Severe was awarded the Green Cross for Safety's Innovation Award for his work on an imaging system to identify problems on a wind turbine without risking a technician's safety on a climb.

Columbia County celebrates Sesquicentennial

October 9 - After a day of celebration, the closing ceremony was held outside the Palus Museum, where the Sesquicentennial Legacy Mural was unveiled. The painting features Chief Bones, the last official chief of the Palus tribe. The committee commissioned and donated the mural to serve as a lasting symbol of Columbia County's history, resilience, and spirit.

Community fights to save Prescott School District

November 13 - After a major financial deficit was identified in the Prescott School District, the state imposed binding conditions to restore the district's economic health within two years. The community stepped up to raise funds through a series of creative fundraisers as the state and school board continue to work to secure the district's future.

Wolfling Coffee shop opens

Trevor Corbin and Caitlyn Potts, owners of Wolfling Coffee, welcomed Waitsburg City Council Member Jillian Henze during the shop's test run on Saturday, November 22. The doors officially opened on Thanksgiving Day, between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. Start your day of family, friends, and cooking with a great coffee and house-made baked goods.

November 27 - Trevor Corbin and Caitlyn Potts opened Wolfling Coffee on Thanksgiving Day. The couple took on a big project after buying and renovating a building on Waitsburg's Main Street. Their investment and hard work created an inviting community space with great coffee and baked goods. Their hours are Thursday through Monday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Waitsburg has an ice (not ice) rink

December 11 - The 40th Annual Hometown Christmas celebration introduced the city's newest park facility, a summer skate park and winter ice rink. After the city's pool was filled and capped, City Administrator Randy Hinchliffe secured funding and a suitable imitation ice product for creative use of the city's property. The rink is a hit, used by skaters of all ages and abilities.
