Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley

Joyce McQuary Lyseng

October 5, 1976 – September 29, 2025

Joyce Lyseng (nee McQuary) passed away peacefully on August 28, 2025, at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Delta, BC.

Joyce was born in Dayton, Washington, on November 14, 1941, to Vyrl and Eileen McQuary.

She lived and grew up in Dayton, attending Dayton High School and going on to earn a degree from Eastern Washington University. She accepted her first job as a Speech Therapist in a new clinic being opened in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. (a bold move for a young lady from southeastern Washington).

While working in Edmonton, she met Gerald Lyseng, and they were married on September 25, 1965. While living in Edmonton, they had two children, Shari and Michael. The family moved to British Columbia in 1979 and has lived in and around Delta, BC, since that time.

Joyce worked for many years in her area of education, which was speech therapy. She later worked in elementary schools as a teacher’s assistant, helping children with learning challenges.

Joyce was a faithful and long-time member of Benediction Lutheran Church in Tsawwassen and was involved as a volunteer with the congregation in many ways. Her confidence in striking up a friendly conversation with strangers made her a perfect greeter at the church entrance on Sunday mornings.

Joyce remained fit and active, playing golf in several casual ladies’ leagues and always on the go to visit friends and family.

Left to mourn are loving husband Gerald; daughter Shari (Richard); son Michael (Dana); grandchildren Joshua (Caley), Olivia, Sjor, and Cora; brothers Tom and family in Seattle, Washington, Michael and family in Dayton, Washington, and countless friends and family on both sides of the border.

A celebration of Joyce’s life will be held at Benediction Lutheran Church at 1 p.m. on October 25.

The family thanks the staff at Irene Thomas for their amazing kindness.
