"You can get us some money for the pool," said City Clerk Randy Hinchliffe at a City Council meeting last fall, responding to community activist Joy Smith who had asked what she could do to help. Smith took the request to Blue Mountain Resource Conservation and Development Council Executive Director Lisa Naylor, who did just that. Naylor, who is also responsible for procuring the PP&L grant that funded the recent painting of the fairgrounds, attained a $4500 Pacificorp Foundation for Learning Grant to be used toward pool repairs. Pacific Power Regional Community Manager Bill Clemens presented the check to the City on April 17.

More rare than a Blue Moon, it has been some 30 years since a major university last recruited a Waitsburg High School athlete. Anne Bickelhaupt has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the Gonzaga University Bulldogs. The 18-year-old Waitsburg High School senior is the first Cardinal, girl or boy, to be recruited to a Division 1A school for basketball on a full scholarship, and the second in any sport in about 30 years. She was also recruited by Washington State University, Western Washington University, the University of Idaho and others. Bickelhaupt, whose 6-3 presence helped the Cards dominate the Blue Mountain Conference in 1998 and 1999, averaged 17.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 5 blocks per game as the Waitsburg Cardinals finished third in state this year and fifth in 1998.
