Twenty-Five Years Ago

December 17, 1998

St. Mark's Altar Society met at the White Stallion for a no-host luncheon on Thursday, December 10. Twelve members were present. A meeting followed at Betty Jo Donnelly's home. Winners of the Christmas Raffle Basket drawing at Hometown Christmas were: Ashley Janovich, the basket; Anita Baker, the Afghan; Therese Overfield, the Beanie Baby family. B.A. Keve reported taking a trunkful of food to the Waitsburg food bank recently, which had been donated by the church. The food bank was glad to receive the dry cereal, as they were completely out.


Bands from the high school, junior high, and sixth grade gave a Christmas performance Monday at the Waitsburg High School auditorium. The bands, under direction of Brad Green, presented several holiday numbers, with a number of solo performances during breaks between sessions. Carla White performed a piano solo.

Fifty Years Ago

December 13, 1973

Mr. and Mrs. Harold "Dick" Roberts who were married on Thanksgiving Day fifty years ago, celebrated the occasion with a cocktail party in the Coral Reef Room of the Wentworth Hotel in Sydney, Australia this past November 29. The affair was hosted by their brother and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Roberts. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Hesper Archer of Walla Walla, Mrs. Harold Gwinn of Dayton, and Waitsburgites, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Harris, Mrs. J.A. Wright and Mrs. Lewis Patton. The localites are part of a tour group that has been visiting New Zealand, Australia and other points of interest "down under." They are expected home this week having been on tour since November 7. Harold Roberts and Lydia Beckley were married on Nov. 29, 1923 and have lived in this area ever since. They are the parents of three children, Richard Roberts of Vancouver, Wa.; David Roberts of Waitsburg; and Mrs. Ralph (Muriel) Hamilton of Coos Bay, Or. The goldenweds have seven grandchildren.


Seventy-Five Years Ago

December 17, 1948

Returning home after seven-weeks vacation and tour of the States are Mr. and Mrs. Donald Abbey, Arlene and Bobby; Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Leid of Huntsville and Mrs. Margaret Rizzuti of Walla Walla.


Sorotus and A.T.E. Clubs enjoyed a joint Christmas party Tuesday evening at the country home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Roberts.

Mr. and Mrs. W.E. LaMay were pleasantly surprised when employees at Maybac Inc. dropped in for a potluck dinner Dec. 3. Present were Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bachtold, Mr. and Mrs. Denzil Mock, Delbert Mock, Velma Mock, and Bob Sickles.

One Hundred Years Ago

December 21, 1923

The A.M. Jensen Co., Walla Walla's largest department store this week purchased the entire stock and fixtures of the Perrine-Jonas Co. of this city.

The Waitsburg team lost their basketball game to Dixie High School 27-12. The lineup of the boys were Kanz, McConnell, Roberts, Milligan and Kenaston. Playing for Dixie were M. Brunton, M. Roff, D. Roff, Brunton and Ray.

Mrs. A. Minnick who has been in this city visiting at the home of her daughters, Mrs. Walter E. Price and Mrs. Mary Hubbard, returned to her home Saturday afternoon with her son Clifford Minnick.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

December 23, 1898

Mr. William D. Pettycord and Miss Geneva H. Fry both of Alto were married last Sunday. Rev. McCallough of Dayton performed the ceremony.

About twenty young people of the Coppei and Wilson Hollow district thoroughly enjoyed themselves Friday evening at a "candy pulling" party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Taylor in Wilson Hollow.

Ira Chew and Jim Mitchell have opened up a turkey shoot on Main Street.
