Where not to drive in Walla Walla

WALLA WALLA—As work on city construction projects continue, drivers will be affected by detours. The following current and upcoming projects were listed in the latest City newsletter:

Isaacs Avenue Water, Sewer & Road project — For the next several weeks, Culbert Construction will continue to focus on the sanitary sewer main and service installation. They are approaching the halfway point with sewer work (in this Division to Roosevelt Phase) as they near White Street. Once this sewer work is completed, they will begin new stormwater installation. While the bulk of this stormwater work will look much like the sanitary sewer installation — that is, a bunch of pipes in the ground — a significant change will be the stormwater swale at the northeast corner of Division intersection. The swale will be located where the traffic island and drop right lane used to exist, and will be a facility similar to the one constructed at the Rose/Isaacs intersection in 2017. This work is scheduled to begin in mid-July.

Howard/Bryant Bridge Replacement Project — Traffic control is in place and excavation work started Wednesday, June 26.

Tietan & Sunset IRRP Project — Underground work on Tietan Street is nearing completion. The curb and gutter are being formed at Fourth Avenue and Sunset Drive. Work on Tietan is scheduled to be complete by Aug. 14.

Spokane Street Bridge Replacement — On June 12, City Council rejected all bids, because of bids exceeding the engineers estimate; concerns regarding construction completion prior to winter; and regulatory restrictions on awarding portions of the contract. The City plans to re-advertise the project for bid late this year for construction in the summer of 2020.

Meanwhile, pavement maintenance continues in many areas. As of July 1, City crews have filled over 5,600 potholes this year. Visit https://gowallawalla.us/media/k2/attachments/PavementMaintenanceProjects_2.pdf to see a list of the work planned, and a timeline of when each project will likely be accomplished.
