WHS students, friends, family members, and fellow scouts helped Troop 313 Senior Patrol Leader Jacob Elder complete his Eagle Scout project of painting the high school grandstands. Rodda Paint donated half of the paint and the Waitsburg School District covered the remainder of the paint and supplies.

WAITSBURG – Waitsburg High School senior Jacob Elder got what he wished for when a break in the rain allowed him to finish his Eagle Scout project during Spring Break. He squeaked the requirement in just before his 18th birthday deadline.

"I chose repainting bleachers because the paint is coming off and that could lead to wood rot or damage to the boards. It would be easier to repaint them than to replace them later," Elder said. He worked with students, family, and fellow scouts to complete the project during spring break, with the biggest challenge being the wet weather.

Elder had secured permission from the school board when he approached them about the project at their March board meeting. Elder attended the March 8 meeting, accompanied by David Long of Rodda Paint, to seek permission for the project.

Elder, who is Senior Patrol Leader for Troop 313 in Dayton, explained that his Eagle Scout project must benefit the community, make a difference in the community, and demonstrate leadership skills.

Elder had previously met with Long, who recommended Shark Skin Paint and agreed to donate half of the required 20 gallons. The school board agreed to cover the cost of the additional paint and supplies, which was just over $300.

Long, who also recently moved to Waitsburg, said he was glad to be asked to help with the project and for the opportunity to support the hometown team. Long not only helped by providing the paint, but also visited the project several times to inspect it during the preparation and painting, Elder said.

Elder started his scouting journey in Paige, Ariz. When he was 11. He moved to Hermiston in 2010 and was part of Troop 605 for six years before moving to Watisburg last summer. He joined Troop 313 in Dayton in June, and achieved the rank of Life Scout shortly after that.

Elder said he has wanted to become an Eagle Scout from the time he began Scouting.

"It's a big accomplishment that shows I have gone all the way and done all that I could. I really enjoy it. It's fun camping and working on outdoor projects, which are a hobby of mine," he said.

Elder says he has to finish up two merit badges – camping and cooking – before his 18th birthday on April 19. He will then be awarded his Eagle Scout rank at an upcoming Court of Honor.

Elder says he plans to stay in the Scouting program, and will likely become a merit badge counselor or Scout leader in the future.
