WAITSBURG – Waitsburg harriers competed, and fared well, against runners from Mac-Hi and Pomeroy at the Asotin Island Run at Chief Timothy Park in Clarkston on Saturday. Junior Emily Adams placed fourth in the girl's race and junior Landon Callas placed 9th in the boys'.

First-year Cardinal X-C Coach Ann Adams said the day was beautiful, warm, and sunny, and that the 2.6 mile course was fast.

"Emily ran a strong race, passing on the big hill for an 18.14 minute 4th place finish (out of 51 racers) in the girl's varsity race," Adams said.

"On the boy's varsity side, Landon Callas had a great race, placing 9th with a time of 15:31, a personal record by almost a minute. Skylar Wood also had a great race, finishing 23rd with a time of 17:10, a huge personal record for him as well. Joe Leamy ran solid, finishing with a time of 19:42 and placing 51st," Adams said. There were 65 competitors in the boy's varsity race.

Waitsburg cross country runners kicked off their season last week at the Hermiston Runner's Soul X-C Fest at Sandstone Middle School on Sat., Sept. 5. Only three of the six team members had accumulated enough practices to race.

Adams said the day was windy but sunny and the 5K course, which was mainly grass, was very soggy following a rainstorm. Adams said Tom House ran a strong race, finishing with a time of 24:03. Joe Leamy struggled a bit, but pushed through for a finishing time of 25:28. Emily Adams had a solid run, bringing home a seventh-place medal, with a finishing time of 20:54 in the girl's varsity race.

Waitsburg's Cross Country runners this year include juniors Emily Adams, Landon Callas, Joe Leamy, Skylar Wood; and sophomores Tom House and Korben Duffy.

The Cards race next at the Seaport Invite in Clarkston on Saturday.
