May 3

Non-injury collision on Eckler Mountain Road near Maloney Mountain Road; tire on vehicle came off and required that vehicle be towed. Two suspicious males allegedly smoking marijuana in a red van on S. 5th Street; deputy contacted subjects, who were not smoking at the time, and advised them that smoking marijuana is not allowed in public. Report made on W. Main Street alleging an assault in April; deputies spoke with the reporting party and will be investigating.

Theft of guitar from a home reported on W. Richmond Avenue; theft occurred over a year ago.

May 5

Report of a deer stuck in a barbed wire fence on the Touchet River dike; a deputy responded, and with the assistance of a Dayton city crew worker, was able to free the deer from the fence. Theft of prescription medication reported at a home on W. Richmond Avenue. Deputies contacted an allegedly suspicious male hanging around the Columbia County Fairgrounds; subject stated he was helping with people’s horses. Domestic dispute reported at Country Village Courts; deputies arrested 47-year-old Dayton resident Scott Schafer on suspicion of fourth-degree assault – domestic violence.

May 6

Deputies assisted the Department of Corrections at Country Village Courts; 19-year-old Dayton resident Dante Brown was arrested on a DOC warrant. Caller on E. Main Street reported that a little red convertible failed to stop at a crosswalk and nearly hit the pedestrians crossing Main Street. Theft of prescription medication reported from a home on N. Cottonwood Street.

May 7

Caller reported signs of a bear in the area of milepost 20 on Tucannon Road; information was forwarded to Fish and Wildlife. IRS phone scam reported from a resident on Harlem Road. Report of a reckless gray and black hatchback being driven down the middle of E. Dayton Avenue and running stop signs; deputies were unable to locate. Deputies assisted Fire District 3 EMTs on a medical call on S. 7th Street. Theft of several hundred dollars in cash from Village Shoppes on E. Main Street. Theft of air compressor and other tools from a shed on W. 2nd Street in Starbuck.

May 8

Report of a juvenile allegedly smoking marijuana on the school bus on the previous day. Second report of a bear in the area of milepost 20 on Tucannon Road; Fish and Wildlife notified. IRS phone scam reported on E. Patit Avenue. Deputy contacted two adults fishing in the juvenile fishing pond at the Dayton City Park; subjects had a child with them and were advised of the laws governing the pond. Sign and a bunch of whirly gigs found in a yard on E. Tremont Avenue; it was determined that these belong to the high school. Suspicious male possibly living in the grandstands of the fairgrounds. Caller on W. Richmond Avenue reporting a neighbor who trespassed to remove a sprinkler that was hitting the neighbor’s belongings. Two-vehicle, non-injury collision reported on E. Main Street; one driver was cited for failure to stop at a stop light. Report of a blue passenger car rolled and in a ditch at milepost 8 on Kellogg Hollow Road; deputies and WSP responded but the driver left the scene prior to their arrival. The vehicle was towed from the scene; investigation ongoing.

May 9

Possibly intoxicated male driver on E. Richmond Avenue behind the wheel of a gold jeep stopped in the middle of the street while the driver appeared to be sleeping, then he woke and continued; deputies were unable to locate. Shed door open and light on inside reported on E. Commercial Street; deputies responded but nothing appeared to be missing. Overdue hiker reported in the Blue Mountains; U.S. Forest Service officer had just contacted the person and confirmed the subject was fine and headed home.
