Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley

50 Years of Great Work

In the spring of 1963, when John Kennedy was president and gas was 30 cents a gallon, a group of 15 Waitsburg men formed a new Lions Club and set out to help out their com- munity. And oh how they've done it.

As reporter Dena Wood reports in these pages, the contri- butions the Lions - they now number nearly 70 - have made to Waitsburg have been invaluable.

The club has made improvements to the race track and football fields at the fairgrounds, they've made repairs and improvements to the Waitsburg Pool and the little league fields, tennis courts and playgrounds. The club has donated funds to numerous groups, including the after school program, the Days of Real Sport royalty and the Junior Livestock Show.

The group recently built the Lions Memorial Building at the fairgrounds, which has become an important meeting place for many local groups, including the Waitsburg City Council.

The Lions are probably most famous around here for their annual salmon bake in the fall and now their rib feed in the spring. These are wonderful community gatherings that raise serious money for club activities.

This week the club held their annual awards dinner and ceremony, to celebrate their anniversary and hand out special awards to members.

We salute the Lions on their important anniversary, and we wish them another fifty years of making invaluable contribu- tions to the Waitsburg community.
