WAITSBURG -- Walla Walla County residents will have one last chance to dispose of tires free of charge in 2011. The final event will be on Oct. 22 at the Waitsburg Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and all county residents can attend the event.

Participants will be asked to provide proof of residency by showing a valid driver's license or property tax statement with an address in Walla Walla County. Residents will be able to dispose of up to 10 passenger car, light truck or motorcycle tires per household. No tractor, large truck, tires over 36 inches, or tires on rims or axles will be accepted. No tires will be accepted from businesses-related sources. Participants are reminded to make sure their load is secured before getting out on roadways to avoid accidents caused by flying debris. The events rely heavily on volunteers and service opportunities range from taking information from drivers to directing traffic to unloading tires. Anyone high school age or older is eligible to volunteer for the event and will receive recognition of their community service. The event is in particular need of volunteers who can assist in handling the tires.

The tire collection events are being funded by a grant from the Washington State Department of Ecology using funds it receives from the $1 fee that is charged on all new tires sold in Washington State. The events are being coordinated by Code Compliance Officers with the Walla Walla Joint Community Development Agency.
