Lady Bulldogs Red Hot, Baseball Team Improving

March 24, 2011

TOUCHET - The Lady Bulldogs softball team is running hot this season. They've played two nonleague games and won both. They are now 2-0.

On Tuesday afternoon, they beat the Touchet Indians in two games: 6-1 and 7-2 .

"We had solid pitching in both games," said assistant coach Desirae Jones "We had some girls step up and hit the ball when we needed them."

Miwa Umeda had five hits for the day with a double and a triple. Kayla Turner had four hits. Samantha Harting had three hits with a double.

"Overall it was just a great effort from all the girls," Jones said. "It's still early in the year, but all the girls who went today got some playing time. They got to get out in the sunshine."

Tuesday, in game one, Dayton pitched with Turner. Umeda was the catcher.

In the second game, Harting pitched. McKayla Bickelhaupt was catching until the fifth inning, when Umeda took over.

"Things went well," said Terry Robins, head Bulldogs coach. "We hit the ball pretty well, strike outs were minimal, and we put the ball into play. We had a couple of errors, but they didn't hurt us bad."

The Lady Bulldogs play another non-league game on Thursday against WaHi JV at 3 p.m. in Dayton.

The Bulldogs baseball team played a much-improved game against Touchet on Tuesday afternoon, but it wasn't enough to take home a win. The Indians won 7-4.

Dayton's record this season is 0-3, but they haven't played any league games yet .

"Actually our pitching wasn't too bad today," said head coach Sal Benavides. "We did a little better than the last game, and we did a little better then than the time before."

In the single game against the Indians, Bulldogs Colton Bickelhaupt, Wyatt Frame, Lowden Smith and Hayden Fullerton pitched. Joey Schlachter was catcher.

Smith played especially well, Benavides said. And Bickelhaupt knocked in two runs in the sixth inning.

Against the Liberty Christian Patriots on Saturday in Dayton, the Bulldogs lost 12-1 and 20-10.

The Bulldogs made eight errors in the two games, but turned three double plays.

The team doesn't know for sure when their next game will be. Changes to the schedule are in the works, Benavides said. They may play again as soon as Friday, or they might have to wait until next week.
