WALLA WALLA - The Lady Cardinals walked on to the Irish courts tied with the rival team 3-0 in the league Friday night. When WP walked away, they left with their heads held high as they took the lead 45-34 and now stand 4-0 in the league. "Any time you come down to DeSales and win a game, it is a big accomplishment," head coach Jerry Baker said. "Any time you play DeSales it is always going to be a battle." Baker knew what he was talking about after the game Friday night. "DeSales gave us the...
DAYTON - The Lady Bulldogs may have lost against Liberty Christian Saturday, but they now know they can win games because they did so twice in a row: against WWVA 41-37 on Thursday and against Lacrosse Washtucna during the holiday tournament. "I know we can play with any of them," head coach Scott Hudson said after Thursday's game against the Knights. "It wasn't pretty, but it was a win." For the men, the picture is different. They're a skilled team, know how to stay in the game despite some...
SEATTLE - You may have missed it over the holidays. But almost three weeks after the football season ended, the 2010 Waitsburg-Prescott team reeled in more recordsetting recognition for their historical performance during the season. One Dayton Bulldog, Colton Bickelhaupt, also received statewide recognition for his efforts on a team that made it to the first round of the playoffs. Sports writers across the state voted to include six Cardinals in the Washington All- State poll, with two winning...
WAITSBURG - Both Cardinals basketball teams succeeded this year where they failed last year. They beat top-ranked Asotin Friday and remained undefeated in the league this far into the season. They continued their winning streaks Saturday by trouncing the Mac-Hi Pioneers. The biggest test and first real challenge for the Lady Cardinals came at the start of the weekend against league rival Asotin. They edged out the Panthers 52-50 in a cliff hanger of a game that could have easily gone either...

DAYTON - Dayton's boys' basketball team came out well (though not in perfect condition) in its two nonleague games last week. The Bulldogs sparred against Lacrosse-Washtucna and Kiona-Benton Wednesday and Thursday at home in the team's annual Christmas Tournament. Against the Lacrosse- Washtucna Tigercats, on Dec. 29, the Bulldogs came out ahead. The final score against this 2B sports combine was 53-43. "I was expecting a challenging game," said Bulldogs head coach Roy Ramirez, who said the Tige...
DAYTON - The Lady Bulldogs received a hardwon gift over the holidays at the annual Christmas Tournament in Dayton - their first win of the season. Playing Wednesday, Dec. 29, against the 2B sports combine Lacrosse-Washtucna, the Bulldogs dominated on the board. Dayton stole the evening with a 45-28 win against the Tigercats. "We had everyone back (on the squad) for the first time all season," an excited head coach Scott Hudson said. "We did not shoot well at all, and we need to improve. We did,...
TOUCHET - The Waitsburg Prescott boys started 2011 with a win against the Touchet Indians at their home court Tuesday night. "Touchet was a scrappy team," WP head coach TJ Scott said. "They caused us to fall back in the game." The Cardinals beat Touchet 52-30, making the boys varsity team 6-1 for the season. "Matthew Hamilton and Zach Bartlow both played great games," Scott said. "They helped keep us on top. Bartlow and Hamilton extended the fourth quarter that resulted in a pretty easy win."...
TOUCHET - Waitsburg Prescott's Lady Cardinals are staying on the ball with their fourth win in a row after defeating the Touchet Indians Tuesday night. The girls are now 6-0. The Cardinals walked into the Indian's home court with their heads held high and left the same way. After a long game, the Lady Cardinals won 47-25. "It was a good win," WP head coach Jerry Baker said. "The defense was a little sloppy due to lack of practice, but the girls put forth great effort." Alyssa Hafen was one...

ASOTIN - Dayton boys struggled to retain a winning edge in their last two away games against Waitsburg and Asotin over the weekend. Their heartbreaking twopoint 36-34 loss to the Cardinals Friday came with less than a minute before the end of the game. In Asotin on Saturday, the Panthers got a quick jump on the Bulldogs and the Dayton boys just couldn't keep up after that, trailing until the final whistle sealed Asotin's win 67-51. Panther Ben Servatius came out hot in the first quarter, shooting six for nine and scoring 14 points for Asotin....
ASOTIN - Saturday night's game against the Lady Panthers was another loss for the Lady Bulldogs with a final score of 59-46, but it was an improvement over their defeat against WP Friday. Against WP's larger, more experienced team, the Lady Bulldogs fell 68-33. On Asotin's court, the Dayton girls had to push hard to keep up. Nicole Lambert led with 13 points, followed by Jessica Tate with eight. Both Samura Miller and McKayla Bickelhapt scored seven points. Zara Reynolds led Asotin with 14...
MILTON-FREEWATER - The lady Cardinals go undefeated after their first four games of the season, adding another win with their 55-21 defeat of the Mac-Hi Pioneers on Tuesday. Even though the girls played well, head coach Jerry Baker said he has a few things in mind that his team will work on before the Holiday Tournament coming up Dec. 28 and 29 in Helix. "We need to work on not allowing turnovers on our part," Baker said. "We need to review our ball-handling skills, man to man, and defensive skills." The girls' games so far have been pretty...
MILTON-FREEWATER - The Cardinals are on a roll, winning their third matchup in a row Tuesday against the Mac-Hi Pioneers in a nonleague game that ended with a score of 59-23. WP only lost their first game of the season in a narrow 47-45 defeat against Weston-McEwen. Though they started off a little behind, the boys quickly caught up to the Pioneers Tuesday night and stayed ahead for the rest of the game. "Overall, it was the best game of the season for the boys," head coach TJ Scott said. The...
POMEROY - The Lady Bulldogs lost to the Pomeroy Pirates in a pre-season game in Pomeroy Tuesday evening, their fourth pre-season loss. The final score was 58-34. What started as a "really good game," according to head coach Scott Hudson, turned gloomy when the Pirates slammed an extra 11 points in the last two minutes of the first half. "The girls literally had meltdown," Hudson said. "And they just could not recover from it. We came out extremely flat in the second half." Before the half, Dayton was just six points behind. In the third quart...
POMEROY - Dayton junior Hayden Fullerton may have had the best game of his life Tuesday night in Pomeroy. The Dayton boys brought the Pirates to their knees during this pre-season basketball game, out-scoring Pomeroy 58-30. Fullerton scored 19 of those points, making four out of six three-point shot attempts. "Fullerton just went ballistic," said Jeff Turner, a scorekeeper for the Bulldogs. Vying for the spotlight Tuesday night were juniors Kroft Sunderland, scoring 11 points, and Colton Bicke...
VISTA HERMOSA - The WP Tigers soccer team didn't break any of its own records this fall. After all, this was its first-ever season. But its tenacious performance set new benchmarks in the state, and its recognition around the league has been impressive, giving the boys and girls from the Broetje Orchards, Prescott and Waitsburg plenty to celebrate. "You started as the lowest-ranked, 23rd, and finished number one (in the 7/9 district)," head coach Rickie Hamilton told the team members, sibl...
WAITSBURG - It may sound like a strange observation, but WP basketball Head Coach T.J. Scott almost prefers to start his season with a loss, particularly against good team. "A loss makes you see what you need to improve on and become the team you want to be," he said. "That was a good team and that was their sixth game." The Cardinals Boys team lost by two points 47-45 in the last handful of seconds of their game against the Weston-McEwen Tigerscots, a heartbreaking cliff hanger more than a r...
WAITSBURG - Though they had to shake off some nerves during the first half of their game against Weston-McEwen, the WP Lady Cardinals came out regrouped after their break and beat the Tigerscots confidently in a lob-sided 45-19 victory. Head Coach Jerry Baker said he wasn't surprised his team came out a bit flat-footed in their first game of the season against an opponent that already had five games on the court, but he was pleased with the way the girls turned on the heat in the second h...
SKI BLUEWOOD OPENS DAYTON - Ski Bluewood's first season under new ownership started on Friday and drew a steady crowd over the weekend. With several feet of new snow since late last week, general manager Travis Stephenson said the new management was excited to kick off the 2010-2011 ski year in a year that promises lots of snowfall. As in years past, the mountain will be open 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily except on Mondays and Tuesdays. Ski Bluewood honors season passes purchased under former owners Stan and Nancy Goodell and offers a full co...
KENNEWICK - Lady Bulldogs coach Scott Hudson called Tuesday night's pre-season game in Kennewick, a "Tale of Two Halves." The score at halftime was 26-25, with the Riverview Panthers just one point ahead of the Dayton girls. But Bulldog Courtney Mings suffered head injury in the first quarter, and the remaining seven varsity players quickly grew exhausted. Dayton scored just seven more points in the second half to Riverview's 40, ending the game 66-32 with the Panthers in the lead. "I thin...
WAITSBURG - With nine returning varsity on WP's girls basketball team, head coach Jerry Baker knows he won't have too much to worry about. Baker has worked with most of the girls on the team before. "It's nice not having a new learning curve," Baker said. "I have already had most of the girls before, and the one I haven't already knows how I work." Baker doesn't let the girls slack a bit. He gets out on the court and shows them how it's done. During break, it's a quick drink, and then he has the...
WAITSBURG - Due to one of the best football seasons many people in this town have ever seen, the WP boys have started their basketball season off later than planned. Monday was only their fifth practice, and they play their first game of the season Tuesday, Dec.14, against Weston-McEwen. "Starting the season off late will be a small challenge, but I believe that with our coaching staff, we should not have a problem," said Cardinal Eshom Estes. And coming hot off the field, from a nearly unparal...
