A photo in the Sept. 20 Times edition that accom- panied the Cardinals Tackle Tigerscots story misidenti- fied a WP player. The cap- tion should have read "Dal- ton LaRue and Alex Dill break up a Tigerscot pass last Thursday in Athena, Ore." Also in the Sept. 20 issue, some of the listings of the fair winners the Times received from the Columbia County Fair Board are incor- rect. Colulmbia County Fair 4-H Beef Showing: Kaleigh White was fitting and show- ing champ. in 4-H....
I enjoyed your article on the band uniforms from 1950. I was a member of the band at that time as was my husband Richard Pettichord. The uniforms were made to fit each member with their names sewn into the pockets. Our daughter Cindy also wore the uniforms in junior high in 1969-1971. She was issued my best friend's uni- form. How is that for coin- cidence? With Mr. Russ as our teacher, we took firsts or Superior ratings at all music festivals and parades. Kay Pettichord Spokane...
It's a shame that in this day and age, women still have to fight for equality. However, equality in the workplace is still an issue and especially when it comes to equal pay for equal work. We trust our members of congress to represent the people in their districts and stand up for our rights. Unfortunately, Cathy McMorris Rodgers does not represent us, especially when it comes to equal pay. Cathy McMorris Rodgers voted against the Lilly Led- better Act. Why would she do this? She did this because the Republican leadership was opposed to it...
If elected, Rich Cowan's outlook would be the oppo- site of Romney's writing off 47 percent of the population, most of whom are seniors and the working poor with children. Cathy McMorris- Rodgers voting record fol- lows along nicely with Mitt Romney's outlook. Elect someone who cares about all the citizens, not just the wealthy, banks and billion- aires and vote for Rich Cow- an in November. By the way, he resigned as CEO of a very successful film production company he created, which has brought millions of dollars and many jobs to the re-...

Dayton's Youth Competitive Swim Team. Waitsburg's Days Of Real Sport Centennial. Camp Wooten's Outdoor Education Program. Lyons Ferry's access for people with disabilities. As the line from that "Sound Of Music" song goes: These are a few of our favorite things in Walla Walla and Columbia counties. And to nurture these community projects and resources, we want to draw attention to a small local organization that recently moved its offices to Waitsburg and celebrates the 50th anniversary of a nation- wide effort by which it was inspired and,...
Dear Editor, The quote "the Kids are the Problem" was a mean and terrible misquote and a botch of the message that was trying to be pre- sented. If I said anything close to that, it surely was taken out of context. The problem is the few kids and young adults who refuse to follow the skate park rules, and because there have been no consequences, have made the environment unac- ceptable. If "the kids are the problem" I sure have wasted over 30 years (18 in Dayton) volunteering with kids to help prove they do matter. The point that I was making...
Camp Wooten Creates Environmental Stewards Local School Districts, Parent Volunteers, Provide Outdoor Education, One-Of- A-Kind Experiences For Our Kids WAITSBURG - From this editor's perspective students learning about nature and how to pro- tect it for generations to come is a true need. And our local schools are wonderful enough to provide that kind of outdoor education to our students by sending the sixth graders to Camp Wooten each school year. Camp Wooten is a state park and an...
Before we get into the question of whether our kids get enough to eat, we need to explore the meaning of a word that has been used in a healthy and, we hope, ongoing discussion in our community about the new federal guidelines for school breakfasts and lunches. (See story on page 1.) The word is hunger. We looked up its definition online and it varies greatly from "a desire for food" to a "painful sensation or state of weakness caused by the need for food." That's an interesting range, a spectrum almost, spanning from something that could pass...
I was very excited to see your article on the front page, "Full-Force Fair!" and was looking forward to reading about all of the hard-working kids who did their best at the fair this year. Imagine how very disappointed I was to see a very special young lady overlooked! Emily Wilson is not only a Waitsburg student, she had the 4-H and Overall Grand Champion Swine at the Walla Walla County Fair this year! Not even a brief mention was made. Emily worked very hard, also earning the Grand Champion Swine 4-H Fitting & Showing award. Perhaps next...

Seniors Collect School Supplies Members Of The Senior Center Gather Supplies For Back To School DAYTON - Fall is an exciting time of year for students and their families; new classrooms, teachers and curriculum and a long list of new school supplies. But for some families, get- ting students back to school is a challenge. The long lists of school supplies needed are never inexpensive and purchasing all of the items is especially difficult for fami- lies with multiple children returning to...
On a drive back from the Tri Cities, the first sign of home in the Touchet Valley comes into view just after you drive by the right turn that goes south. On that last stretch of Highway 124 before you get into Prescott, it lies to the left of the road and it's steeped in blue - a cooling sight on a hot day. We're talking, of course, about the Prescott swimming pool, which has been a fixture in the townscape for half a century, an oasis in the beautiful but dry summer wheat fields that invites to "come swim with us." It's a community asset in...
Dear Editor, When the local Sears store closed, I applied to open a HOMETOWN Store in Walla Walla as a family-owned business. Sears' definition of a HOMETOWN Store is one that is owned and operated locally. My application went through and was accepted. I had many phone conferences and a couple of interviews with Sears Development/ District Managers. My sons and I had done our homework that Sears wanted done as far as foot and vehicle traf- fic patterns, permits needed, storefronts available, and all the necessary preliminary research we were as...
Cade Branson is the third prize winner of the American Legion Auxiliary Essay Con- test, complete with a $25. prize. His essay follows: How to Show Patriotism There are thousands of ways to show patriotism even from just saying the pledge of al- legiance. Showing patriotism is something every American should do. There are three major ways to show patriotism that I find very important, pride, justice, and liberty. Pride is waking up and be- ing proud to be free and live in America. Honoring our country is the leading way to show pride, the act...

I t's a great pleasure to announce the promotion of our Manag- ing Editor Jillian Beaudry to the position of editor. The change is effective immediately. As editor, Jillian will take foremost responsibility for the content of the newspaper, the development of our news coverage, long-range content planning and so on. As a publisher with a long career in journalism, I will assist Jillian in this position but more as "an actor in a supporting role." Jillian will be the "actress in a leading role" to use a Hollywood metaphor, while I continue to...
I really appreciate the time, effort and caring that Troy with Touchet Valley Repair put into helping us last week when we broke down in Waitsburg. One never knows who can be trusted in those situations and I really appreciated the amount of time he spent trouble shooting our problem. He was obvi- ously not trying to make a buck! He could have really stuck it to us, but he was so fair and profes- sional. Thank you so very much.. Terri Stillwaugh Caldwell, Idaho...
Editor's Note: This letter to the editor is from Jim Davison, who was featured in the Heartbeat Column in the Aug. 23 edition for his volunteer work on the press box at the Waitsburg High School football field. It is apparent that more questions should have been asked when The Times called requesting to take my picture. Regard- less, thanks to you and the others who had kind words to say on my behalf in the article which accompanied the requested picture. The real story is, in this case, I just happened to be the person chosen to represent all...
