WAITSBURG - The Dayton Bulldogs and WP Cardinal volleyball players forfeited their traditional crimson and white warm-ups in favor of pink at last Thursday's game in Waitsburg. Fans on both sides got in on the act as well - donning pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness and to raise funds for Prescott's Berenice Mendoza who is battling the disease. WP coach Angie Potts said it meant a lot for her team to play hard since Berenice was in attendance at the game. The Cards lost, but fought hard...
| PRESCOTT - Cool weather and changing colors bring to mind warm sweaters, hot chocolate and football. Swimming is the last thing on most people's minds, unless you're a board member of the Prescott Joint Park and Recreation District (PJPRD), that is. For them, fall means once again lobbying to fund the Prescott Swimming Pool - a resource they'd like to see Prescott residents giving serious attention to as well. In November, voters in Prescott's Parks and Rec. district will be asked to renew the...
PRESCOTT - The Tuxedo Bar & Grill might be located in Prescott, but according to one Waitburg resident, if you stop in on Wednesday's taco night, half the tables will be filled with Waitsburgers. Owner Pam Steuckle says that not only Waitsburgers, but diners from across region - Walla Walla, Waitsburg, Dayton, Tri-Cities and Lewiston -- make a point of dropping by. "We're a few minutes from everywhere, and the Tux is kind of a legend." she said. Pam and her husband, Larry, bought The Tux on...

DAYTON - Would a hiker need a permit to take photos while walking the Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness -- the roughly 176,500 acres located in the Blue Mountains of southeastern Washington and northeastern Oregon? The obvious answer is'no.' Unfortunately, a soon-to-be-finalized Forest Service measure on the matter makes that less than obvious. In fact, it's so unclear that local landscape photographer Nick Page recalls being informed by a Park Ranger that he would need to purchase a $150 permit to...
WAITSBURG - At last week's City Council meeting city administrator Randy Hinchliffe requested the council award artist Jeffrey Hill $20,000 - an amount he anticipates will repaid through grants and community donations -- to allow Hill to start on his "Founding Fathers" sculpture. That motion was made, but died after failing to receive a second. Instead, council passed and approved a motion to support fundraising efforts to secure the piece contingent upon cash payments being paid from...

Lexi Ramirez served a perfect 15/15 service with 2...
WAITSBURG -The WP Cardinals volleyball team hopes to be "in the pink" (literally!) at their Oct. 23 home game against Dayton. The team has traditionally dressed the part for at least one game during Breast Cancer Awareness month but has decided to raise more than just awareness this year - they are working to raise funds for a local family struggling to beat the disease. Varsity team co-captains Samantha Fedderson, Paige Wood and Caitlyn Jones spoke with The Times about the motivation behind the...
WAITSBURG - Waitsburg students will be in for a special treat on October 2. Last month, Gov. Jay Inslee proclaimed October 1 as Taste Washington Day, a day where schools partner with farmers to include fresh Washington-grown foods in their cafeteria meals. That date didn't work for Waitsburg, motivating Food Services Supervisor Susan Wildey to take the program one step further and offer an even more locally focused Taste of the Valley day on October 2. Taste of Washington began in 2010 when the...

Torres moved to Waitsburg with her husband Lupe eleven years...

According to npr.org, the virus is responsible for killing more than seven million piglets in the past year and has been found in 30 states. Scientists are still unsure of...

WAITSBURG – A handful of individuals in every community make their mark by fulfilling the call to civic responsibility by working with clubs and organizations and/or holding public office in order to serve the needs of society. These people deserve our gratitude, appreciation and honor. Even less common than the handful is the singleton who forgoes public and organized service in favor of making a conscious effort to touch lives and show love to all who crossed his path. Such is the case with W...
WAITSBURG - The passion artist Jeffrey Hill holds for Waitsburg's Main Street Art project was evident as he shared his vision for "The Founding Fathers" sculpture with the Waitsburg Arts Commission and interested citizens at an artist's presentation last month. That passion is apparently still alive in spite of the fact that Squire Broel's competing piece, an obelisk shaped monument, received the Arts Commission's recommendation and final City Council approval. City Administrator Randy Hinchliff...

Potts, who has coached a total of 23 years between Prescott, Wa Hi and WP, is joined by Assistant Coach Tammy Brown (Potts' former WWCC...

Helm (whose maiden name is Potts, which is where the Kirkman connection comes in) grew up on her family's farm near L...
