Photo caption: Becky and Randy Pearson were honored as Boosters of the Year by the Waitsburg Booster Club. The presentation by Booster Club President Ross Hamann was made during halftime of the girls basketball game last Frisday. The Pearsons generously give of their time, talents, and treasure to help numerous activities in Waitsburg, Hamann said.

Scholars from Dayton and Waitsburg High again scored in the top echelon of schools at the All Schools Knowledge Bowl meet in Richland Monday, February 9. Dayton’s team 1 bested Waitsburg’s team 1 on the written round, to edge them by one point in the finals. Both teams fell in behind DeSales. WHS’s team one for the February meet was Kourtney Foley, John Hockersmith, Matt Leid, Chris Carpenter, Zach Beasley, and Ellie Bartlow. Team two was Nick Carpetnter Austin Beasley, Ben Kiefel, Phil Kock, Wyatt Withers, Jennifer Lyden, and Fletcher Baker. The teams are coached by Mr. Brad Green.

The 1994 Days of Real Sport court consists of three young ladies who are proud to have been chosen to represent the annual event. They are Jacelyn Leid, Angela Harting and Suzy Hewitt.

Two Dayton High School students have been selected to serve as pages for the state House of Representatives this month in Olympia. Jessica Ingram and Ryan Gerlitz were notified of their selections last month by chief clerk of the House Marilyn Showwalter. The two will serve as pages Feb 14-18

An agreement to lease city-owned land to Waitsburg Community Fieldhouse, Inc at the fairgrounds has been approved by the city. The life of the lease is 20 years. The lease charges the Fieldhouse Corporation $1 a year, directs that profits be used to maintain the Community Building and property and call on the corporation to provide fire and damage insurance on the property.

Photo Caption: The winners of the Cub Scout Blue and Gold banquet pine-wood derby race last Monday evening proudly display the cars which won the den prizes. Left to right, Larry Olsen, Patton McKinney, Kevin Richardon and Gary Goruch. Pack 336 borrowed the derby track from Walla Walla Scout office and set it up in the mult-purpose room. The race was watched with great interest by all parents, and cubs there.

Photo Caption: The Cardinal team got pulled out of the game mid-way in the fourth quarter and spent the remainder of the game relaxing on the floor in front of the bench. Lazy Cards are Andy Maib, Jack Roberts, Jim Leid, George Rodman and Dan Henze.

Merle Brown of Prescott is proud of his horse Jet’s Pokey, and well he should be for this five-year old has a promising future ahead of him if he continues the pace he has set this year. Recently the Chronicle of the Horse, a magazine published in the East, wrote to Merle asking for a picture and some information on his prize jumper since Jet’s Pokey won the title of green Jumper champion of the 1968 Horse Shows Association of Washington.

Mrs. J.V. Glover will carry the mail on Route 1 beginning next week when her husband will leave for the service.

John Public is given warning that if he wished to retain his gas coupons he better sign all of them at once. The order has been put into effect to stem the black market and indiscriminate use of coupons.

W. H. (bill) Dickerson has resigned his duties as night watchman taking effect the first of the week. His place has been temporarily filled by Roy Crall.

One Hundred Years Ago

February 14, 1919

Last Saturday on the local floor, the high school basketball team defeated the Ellensburg boys 31-19. After the game, reception was given the boys by the Domestic Science Class.

Roy Allen of Seattle, formerly of this city, who is working in the shipyards (when they are not on strike) is in town this week.

The lecture by Princess Radziwill at the Christian Church late Friday night was well attended but our people were rather disappointed in the first number of the Lyceum course. Her talk on conditions in Russia was all very well so far as she went but she seemed in too much of a hurry to get through and her broken English was very difficult to understand.

Waitsburg is badly in need of a first-class shoe repair man. There is a good opening here at this place for the right man. Write the Waitsburg Commercial Club if interested.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

February 1, 1894

A. L. Matheny is now in the potato business and is contracting for the ’94 crop at 50 cents per sack. This week he contracted with Lewis Cox for five car loads at that price

John Loundigan has discontinued the photographing business in this city and will in a few days return to his photo car, now in Iowa.

Prescott had a small fire on Saturday night, destroying the residence belong to Mrs. Grant and occupied by Frank Romine and family.
