Lady 'Dogs Win One of Three at State

Dayton finishes 17-11; seniors Savannah McFarland and Mia Becker finish careers

YAKIMA – The Dayton softball team traveled to Yakima to participate in the 2B state tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs played three games before being knocked out of the tournament by Northwest Christian.

In the first game Dayton faced off against Ocosta, but came up short losing 11-6 and sending the Bulldogs to the consolation bracket. Dayton outhit Ocosta 13-12, but couldn’t put together their hits to score. Ocosta put big hits on the board when they needed them by hitting four doubles and a triple.

Dayton’s Hanna Becker and Megan Robins each had a triple in the game. Savannah McFarland and Robins went three for four apiece at the plate, with McFarland tallying three RBIs and Robins two. Destiny Brinken also had two hits during the game. But six defensive errors took the Bulldogs out of the game and added to Ocosta’s momentum.

In the second game the Lady ‘Dogs defeated Kettle Falls 5-4. Even though Kettle Falls put up eight hits to Dayton’s six, their errors contributed to Dayton’s win.

Dayton cleaned up their defense and had no errors in the game. The Bulldogs also came up with hits at opportune times.

Kettle Falls scored first with a run in the first inning, but Dayton bounced back scoring runs in the second and third innings. Neither team put anything on the board in the fourth. Kettle Falls scored one run in the fifth and outscored Dayton two to one in the sixth.

Down by one at the top of the seventh, Tatum Laughery got on base with a mishandled bunt and stole second base. Hanna Becker got a free pass on a walk to put runners at first and second. Laughery then stole third and advanced home on a bad throw on the steal to tie the game. Becker moved to third on a wild pitch and Dobbs brought her home with a grounder to second.

On Saturday morning, Dayton faced Northwest Christian Crusaders. Neither team tallied any runs in the first inning, then Dayton put two on the board to take the lead in the second. Both teams went scoreless until the Crusaders tied the game in the fourth inning. NWC then scored five runs in the fifth and two more unanswered runs in the sixth and the Bulldogs were unable to recover. Dayton put one run on the board in the seventh.

Scully Castorena had two hits, but the Crusader’s Nelson, Rabe, and J. Frampton combined for seven hits and two RBI’s each to help their cause.

“The girls should be proud of their accomplishments this year,” said Dayton Coach Desirae Jones. “This team has a lot of heart, and a lot of talent. We finished the season with a record of 17-11. We will miss our two seniors, Savannah McFarland and Mia Becker.”
